Product Description
This pattern creates a super cute Dog blanket which is very versatile and can be used as a cot blanket, pram blanket, play mat, comforter or toy. I came up with the pattern to add to my Noah's cot blanket collection.
The blanket will keep baby both entertained and cosy, the textured blanket stitch is soft and warm and the amigurumi head, tail and legs are fun to play with but not too heavy or bulky when it is used as a blanket, it is easy to store as it is designed to be hung over a cot.
Pattern details: The pattern is a written over 14 pages and includes detailed written pattern notes, lots of photos, stitch tutorials and links to tutorials and videos that may be helpful. The pattern includes instructions for both floppy and pointy ears as well as long and short tail options
Noah's Dog Cot Blanket Crochet Pattern
What is Being Made
Noah's Dog Cot Blanket is a charming crochet blanket designed by Crafty Penguin Crochet, perfect for pet owners and crochet enthusiasts alike. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished blanket measuring approximately 70cm x 80cm when laid flat, or 40cm x 40cm when folded. The design combines functionality with decorative appeal, making it an ideal project for creating a cozy covering for a dog cot or small pet bed.
Difficulty Level and Suitability
This pattern is classified as a beginner-level project, making it accessible to crocheters who are new to the craft or looking for a straightforward, rewarding make. The straightforward construction and basic stitch combinations allow beginners to build confidence while creating a practical finished item.
Techniques Used
The pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for beginner crafters. Key techniques include:
- Foundation Single Crochet (FSC) for establishing stable base rows
- Magic Ring (MR) construction for creating seamless circular or centered elements
- Back loop only and front loop only stitching (SCBLO and SCFL) for textured variations
- Slip stitch joining for connecting rounds and finishing edges
- Decreasing techniques using single crochet 2 together (SC2TOG) for shaping
- Embroidery work for adding decorative details in contrasting colors
Stitches Used
Noah's Dog Cot Blanket utilizes a range of basic crochet stitches that form the foundation of most crochet projects:
- Chain (CH): The foundational stitch used to create the base of the pattern
- Single Crochet (SC): The primary stitch throughout the blanket, providing a dense, sturdy fabric
- Half-Double Crochet (HDC): Used to add height and texture variation where needed
- Double Crochet (DC): Incorporated for areas requiring lighter, more open stitching
- Slip Stitch (SLST): Used for joining rounds and finishing edges neatly
Materials Required
The pattern calls for specific materials to achieve the intended design and finished size:
- Yarn: Approximately 1050 yards (970 meters) of DK weight yarn as the primary material. The designer used Stylecraft DK in white, grey, and black, along with James C. Brett Northern Lights DK yarn for the main blanket construction
- Accent Yarn: Small amounts of pink and black yarn in weight 3 (DK equivalent) for embroidered details and decorative elements
- Crochet Hooks: Three hook sizes are required—3.5mm (size E), 4mm (size G), and 5mm (size H)—allowing the crocheter to change hooks as directed in the pattern to achieve different fabric densities
- Additional Supplies: A yarn needle (blunt needle) for weaving in ends and embroidery work, stitch markers for tracking pattern progress, embroidery scissors for precise trimming, and stuffing material for any three-dimensional elements
Pattern Notes and Gauge
An important note for crocheters working this pattern: gauge is not particularly critical for this project. This flexibility makes it especially beginner-friendly, as achieving exact gauge tension is not essential to the blanket's success. The pattern does specify that chain 1 or chain 2 stitches at the beginning of rows do not count as stitches, which is a standard convention in crochet pattern writing. Crocheters should follow the hook size changes indicated in the pattern to achieve the desired fabric characteristics and finished dimensions.
