Product Description
This pattern is part of my ongoing Avalon series, which explores a variety of cabled designs. These designs are inspired by the novel Mists of Avalon.
There is a legendary love triangle between Arthur, Gwenhwyfar, and Lancelot. In the end, Lancelot marries Elaine. Together they have a daughter, Nimue, known for her beauty.
This design employs a series of elegant cables, using simple cabling techniques to achieve a complex-looking piece.
I used aggressive blocking in this piece to create light fabric with a lot of drape, rather that the stiffer fabric that often comes with cables.
Blocking dimensions: 70" long x 15" wide
Includes both charted and written instructions
Recommended yarn weight: Worsted or Aran
Nimue Cabled Wrap by Ana Campos
Project Overview
The Nimue Cabled Wrap is an intermediate-level knitting pattern designed by Ana Campos. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for creating a sophisticated wrap featuring prominent cable work. The finished wrap measures approximately 9.25 inches across at the cable pattern section before blocking, making it an elegant accessory piece suitable for various occasions.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a knitted wrap with decorative cabling as the focal point. The wrap is designed with cable patterns that work on both sides of the fabric, creating visual interest and texture from multiple angles. The project is suitable for knitters with intermediate skills who are comfortable working with cables and following both written instructions and chart-based patterns.
Techniques and Skills Required
Knitters working on the Nimue Cabled Wrap will practice several essential knitting techniques:
- Cabling on both sides: The pattern features cable work visible from multiple angles, requiring knitters to work cables throughout the piece rather than just on one side
- Knitting and purling: Fundamental stitches used to create the base fabric and define the cable patterns
- Cast on and cast off: Proper edge techniques to begin and finish the wrap securely
- Following charts and written instructions: The pattern is provided in both chart and written formats, allowing knitters to choose their preferred method
Stitches Used
The Nimue Cabled Wrap utilizes cable stitches as its primary design element. Knitters will work with knit and purl stitches to create the cable patterns, using a cable hook to manipulate stitches and create the characteristic twisted rope-like texture that defines cabled knitting.
Materials and Tools
To complete this wrap, knitters will need:
- Yarn: 600 yards of Worsted or Aran weight yarn. The pattern suggests Toil & Trouble Aran MCN or Toil & Trouble Worsted as suitable options
- Knitting needles: Size 8 needles, or the size needed to achieve proper gauge
- Cable hook: Required for manipulating stitches when working the cable patterns
- Finishing tools: A crochet hook or tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends
Gauge and Finishing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 3.5 inches wide by 2.25 inches tall measured at the center cable pattern before blocking. Achieving proper gauge is essential for the wrap to reach its intended finished dimensions. The wrap measures 9.25 inches across when measured at the cable pattern section before blocking, though blocking may adjust final measurements.
Pattern Format
This intermediate-level pattern is provided in downloadable PDF format and includes both chart and written instructions, giving knitters flexibility in how they prefer to follow the pattern. The format allows for easy reference during the knitting process and can be printed for convenient use at the crafting table.
