Nilgiri Cardigan by Laura Chau

What is Being Made

Nilgiri is a relaxed-fitting cardigan featuring a geometric lace pattern throughout. The design is versatile and can be styled for both casual and dressed-up occasions. The cardigan is characterized by its neat hems and garter stitch bands that frame and offset the delicate lacy stitch work, creating a balanced visual design.

Construction Method and Techniques

This cardigan employs a strategic construction approach that minimizes seaming and creates a seamless fit. The body is worked in one piece from the bottom up, beginning with a provisional cast on and incorporating a knit-in hem for a polished finish. The sleeves are knit flat from the bottom to the underarm, then joined together with the body to work the seamless raglan yoke. This construction method ensures clean lines and professional finishing throughout the garment.

Stitch Patterns and Details

The primary design feature is a unique geometric lace pattern that is described as easy and fast to work, making it ideal for beginner lace knitters. The lace pattern is complemented by neat hems and garter stitch bands that provide structure and frame the openwork design. The combination of these stitch elements creates visual interest while remaining accessible to knitters developing their lace skills.

Yarn and Materials

Nilgiri is designed to be worked in aran or worsted weight yarn, providing good stitch definition for the geometric lace pattern. The pattern is suitable for knitters of intermediate skill level. Standard knitting needles appropriate for the chosen yarn weight are required.

Sizing and Fit

The cardigan is meant to be worn with zero to 3 inches (7.5 cm) of ease. Knitters should choose the finished size closest to their high bust measurement, or select one size up for a more relaxed and comfortable fit.
