Product Description
This is a lovely modern scarf shawl, with grey owls running along the lower edge, and the sky fading into night. It is knitted in the same way as an asymmetrical scarf shawl, but the end result is virtually a triangle, with the increase edge running along the top. The tassels are optional.
An easy/intermediate knit, you will need to know the basics plus yfwd, kfb, k2tog, and very simple cabling. The instructions are written line by line in English, with British/US terms.
The yarn in the photos is Berroco Vintage DK - some of the colours are not available anymore on LoveCrafts, so I have listed an alternative, but any DK yarn would be suitable.
This could be an extra layer, worn as a scarf over the top of a Winter coat. Or it could also be worn as a cosy wrap on a cool summer’s eve.

Night Sky Scarf Shawl by The Lonely Sea
What is Being Made
The Night Sky Scarf Shawl is a versatile triangular wrap designed by Heather Corcoran of The Lonely Sea. This adult-sized accessory functions as both a traditional scarf and a shawl, measuring approximately 152cm (60 inches) in width and 74cm (29 inches) in depth from the center neck point downward. The design features a modern aesthetic with grey owls depicted along the lower edge, complemented by a sky that fades in color intensity, creating a night-themed visual narrative. Optional tassels can be added to enhance the finished piece.
Techniques and Construction Methods
This pattern employs double knit as the primary construction technique, a method that creates a reversible, double-layered fabric with distinct pattern visibility on both sides. The scarf shawl is worked using the back-and-forth method on circular needles, a common approach for flat pieces that require extended stitch capacity. The pattern incorporates cable work, as indicated by the requirement for a cable needle, adding textural depth and visual interest to the finished garment. The piece is completed using a bind-off technique worked with a larger needle size to create a flexible, non-restrictive edge finish.
Stitches and Stitch Details
While the PDF content confirms the use of cable techniques and double knit construction, specific stitch abbreviations and detailed stitch-by-stitch instructions are contained within the full pattern document. The double knit method itself creates a fabric using knit and purl stitches in coordinated sequences across two yarn colors or shades, allowing the owl motifs and sky gradient to emerge as the fabric develops. Cable stitches are incorporated to add structural and decorative elements throughout the design.
Materials and Tools Required
This pattern calls for DK weight yarn (Double Knit), specifically Berroco Vintage DK, which provides 266 meters (290 yards) per 100-gram ball. The color palette consists of three complementary shades: Dark Denim (2143), Blue Moon (191B), and Smoke (2106), with one ball of each color required for the adult size. The designer notes that most double knit and knit-weight yarns should work well as substitutes, though knitters are advised to check tension and gauge carefully, as yardage per ball may vary between yarn brands.
Essential tools include 5mm (UK size 6 / US size 8) circular needles measuring 100cm (40 inches) in length, which are worked back and forth as if using straight needles. A 6mm (UK size 4 / US size 10) needle of any style is needed for the cast-on and bind-off processes. Additional notions include a 5mm cable needle for managing cable stitches and a tapestry needle (also called a large needle) for weaving in yarn ends and assembling the finished piece. Optional tassel-making materials may be desired for embellishment.
Skill Level and Pattern Difficulty
The Night Sky Scarf Shawl is rated as Easy/Intermediate, making it accessible to knitters with some foundational experience. The inclusion of cable work and the double knit technique require familiarity with these methods, positioning it slightly beyond beginner level. However, the straightforward construction and the use of circular needles for extended stitch counts make it a manageable project for intermediate-level crafters seeking to develop their technical skills.
