Product Description

I made a male moose a year ago and I had a request to make a female moose to accompany him this year. A friend collects all moose figurines and stuffies and is always glad to have a new moose in her collection. I imagine that everyone knows that the female moose does not have antlers and of course the baby is too young to have grown any yet. The design for each of the female and the baby are written out in this pattern. I used baby yarn for the female and fingering yarn for the baby. Easy and quick to knit and then accessorize as you wish - in Christmas decor or otherwise. Brings a smile to anyone who loves animals.

Nellie and Baby Nate Northlands Moose Family Knitting Pattern

What Is Being Made

This knitting pattern creates a charming moose family consisting of two stuffed toy animals: Mama Nellie and Baby Nate. Nellie, the mother moose, measures 12.5 inches tall with a 6-inch width at the widest point, while Baby Nate stands 9.5 inches tall and 4 inches wide. These are soft, three-dimensional knitted toys designed to be hugged and displayed, making them ideal handmade gifts or craft sale items.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

The pattern employs intermediate-level knitting techniques suitable for crafters with foundational skills and experience working with shaping and assembly. Construction involves knitting individual body components that are subsequently assembled together using a tapestry needle. The toys are stuffed with polyester filling to create their plush, dimensional form. For enhanced stability and a more substantial feel, the pattern recommends adding pinto beans as weight inside each moose's feet, though this step is optional.

Stitches and Yarn Specifications

This design works with both 3-ply and 4-ply yarn weights, offering flexibility in material selection while maintaining the intended finished size. The pattern utilizes standard knitting stitches appropriate for toy construction, with stitch holders employed during the knitting process to manage active stitches when shaping different body sections.

Materials Required

  • 3mm knitting needles
  • Tapestry needle for seaming and assembly
  • Stitch holders for managing stitches during construction
  • Polyester stuffing for filling the toys
  • One pair of 9mm black and white safety eyes for each moose
  • Two plastic canvas pieces measuring 3 inches by 2 inches for each moose's feet (optional but recommended)
  • Pinto beans for weight distribution in feet (optional but recommended for stability)
  • Hot glue gun and hot glue for attaching embellishments
  • 6 inches of ¼-inch elastic

Design Details

The pattern includes safety eyes as facial features, providing a professional and secure finish compared to embroidered alternatives. The plastic canvas foot inserts offer structural support, while optional pinto bean weights ensure the finished toys stand securely and feel appropriately weighted. The elastic component adds functional detail to the design.
