Navachóch Diamonds Knitted Cushion Cover
Project Overview
Navachóch Diamonds is a knitted cushion cover design by Ciara Ní Reachtnín, inspired by the artwork of the Navajo nation. The word "Navachóch" is Irish for Navajo, reflecting the cultural inspiration behind this decorative home accessory. This intermediate-level knitting project combines traditional colorwork techniques to create a striking 38 cm by 40 cm (14" by 16") square cushion cover.
Construction Method
The cushion cover is worked flat in separate pieces using Aran weight yarn, then sewn together upon completion. This modular approach allows for easier management of the colorwork sections and simplifies the assembly process. The finished cushion features practical closures and refined finishing details that elevate its appearance.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This design showcases two primary colorwork techniques:
- Intarsia: Used to create larger blocks of solid color within the pattern, allowing for clean color transitions without carrying yarn across the back of the work
- Fair Isle: Employed for detailed patterning, with multiple colors worked across rows to build the intricate diamond motifs
Additional stitch techniques include garter stitch for the button band closure, which provides a textured, reversible finish. An icord binding is used to join the cushion pieces together, creating a professional, decorative seam that doubles as a design element.
Finishing Details
The cushion closure features complementary buttons secured with a garter stitch button band, allowing for easy removal and cleaning of the cover. Decorative tassels complete the design, adding texture and visual interest to the finished cushion.
Yarn and Materials
This project uses Studio Donegal Donegal Aran Tweed, a 100% wool yarn in Aran weight. The yarn specifications are 88 yards (80 meters) per 50-gram ball. The color palette consists of:
- 4885 Oatmeal as the main color (MC): 4 balls
- 4886 Rust as contrast color 1 (CC1): 2 balls
- 4843 Aubergine as contrast color 2 (CC2): 1 ball
- 4847 Teal as contrast color 3 (CC3): 1 ball
Gauge and Needles
The pattern is worked at a gauge of 18 stitches by 21 rows over 10 cm (4 inches) in the colorwork sections when blocked. 4.5 mm needles are recommended, though the appropriate needle size may vary to achieve the correct gauge. Proper gauge is essential for achieving the specified finished dimensions of 38 cm by 40 cm (14" by 16") square.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern is suitable for knitters with experience in basic colorwork techniques. Familiarity with both Intarsia and Fair Isle methods, as well as comfort with seaming and finishing techniques, will enhance the knitting experience and result in a professional-looking finished cushion.
