Product Description
Natale a Milano (Christmas in Milan) is a bottom-up crescent shawlette. An easy lace border (with optional beads) is worked immediately after casting on. Subsequently, the rest of the shawl is worked in stockinette stitch with short rows and garter stitch. While working the short rows, just turn the work once you reach the prescribed stitch. In the following row, work to 1 st before the gap created by turning the work and decrease by working together the two stitches on each side of the gap. This will both hide the holes and create the curved shape of this shawlette. Natale a Milano is knitted with a single skein of Sesia’s Dahù Fancy or Dahù, with the optional addition of 54 beads.
Natale a Milano Crescent Shawlette by Alice Twain
Project Overview
Natale a Milano is a bottom-up crescent shawlette designed by independent designer Alice Twain. This downloadable knitting pattern creates an elegant, curved shawl inspired by the Italian song "Natale a Milano" (Christmas in Milan) by La Crus. The design combines decorative lace work with classic shawl construction techniques, making it suitable for intermediate-level knitters seeking a refined accessory project.
What Is Being Made
The Natale a Milano pattern produces a crescent-shaped shawlette—a smaller, more wearable version of a traditional shawl. The curved silhouette is achieved through strategic short-row shaping, creating a graceful crescent that drapes elegantly around the shoulders. This versatile accessory works as both a decorative wrap and a functional layer for cooler weather.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Bottom-up construction: The shawlette is worked from the cast-on edge upward, allowing knitters to try on the piece as it grows
- Short-row shaping: Strategic turning points create the distinctive crescent curve without increasing stitches dramatically. Knitters simply turn the work at prescribed stitch counts to build the curved shape
- Decrease techniques for gap closure: Two stitches on either side of the gap created by turning are worked together in decreases, which both hides turning holes and reinforces the shawl's curved structure
- Lace border work: An easy lace pattern is worked immediately after casting on, providing decorative detail at the shawlette's lower edge
- Optional beadwork: The lace border accommodates optional beads for additional embellishment and visual interest
Stitches Used
- Stockinette stitch: Forms the main body of the shawlette, creating a smooth, classic fabric
- Garter stitch: Used in sections to add texture and structure
- Lace stitches: Decorative openwork in the border, worked in an easy pattern suitable for intermediate knitters
- Decreases: Two-stitch decreases worked at turning gaps to shape and refine the crescent form
Materials and Yarn Specifications
Natale a Milano is designed to be knitted with a single skein of Sesia's Dahù Fancy or Dahù yarn. The pattern calls for 4-ply yarn weight, which provides the ideal balance of drape and stitch definition for both the lace border and stockinette body. The single-skein construction makes this an efficient project for stash use or gift-giving. Knitters will require appropriate needles sized for 4-ply yarn to achieve proper gauge and fabric characteristics.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern assumes knitters are comfortable with basic stitches, short-row techniques, and lace reading. The straightforward lace border and logical short-row progression make it accessible to knitters advancing beyond beginner level, while the shaping techniques provide valuable skill-building opportunities.
Pattern Format
Natale a Milano is available as a downloadable PDF pattern, allowing immediate access to instructions for digital reference or printing. The pattern is protected by designer copyright and may only be purchased through authorized Ravelry dealers or the Ravelry platform.
