What is Being Made
My Giant Gargoyle is an 18-inch tall knitted toy designed by Phoenixknits. This stuffed gargoyle figure can be posed in various positions and serves as a decorative or playable doll. The finished project creates a three-dimensional character suitable for display or as a soft toy.
Craft and Techniques
This is a knitting project worked primarily in the round or flat pieces that are subsequently assembled. The gargoyle is constructed using traditional toy-making techniques, including knitting individual body components such as limbs, wings, and the main body, then stuffing and sewing them together. The design incorporates shaping methods to create dimensional features and poseable elements.
The pattern utilizes medium weight florist wire for shaping the wings, allowing the gargoyle to hold specific poses. This wire is optional if the finished toy is intended for young children. Builders are advised to use spare knitting needles or double-pointed needles (DPN's) to temporarily hold limbs in place before final assembly, enabling the maker to visualize the finished appearance and experiment with different positioning before committing to sewing.
Stitches and Construction
While specific stitch names are not detailed in the provided materials, the pattern employs standard knitting stitches appropriate for toy construction in DK weight yarn. The tension guideline is 6 stitches and 8 rows to an inch, though the designer notes that tension is not critically important as long as the maker remains consistent throughout the project.
