Product Description
My First Jumper (2in1) is a simple, oversized, beginner friendly pattern. The pattern can be knit up in about a week and is easy/beginner level. The “level up” section of the pattern is a perfect introduction into intarsia knitting also. The jumper is knit up in 4 panels using straight needles and is made up of one front panel, one back panel and two sleeves. The “half and half” section fo the pattern also includes a ribbed neckline if you would like to include it. These panels are then all seamed together and finished up by weaving in the ends.
The pattern includes sizes XS to 3XL. The sample is knit in size S. If you would like to use a different weight of yarn, measurements are included. The techniques you will need to know are knit, purl, 1x1 rib, knit 2 together, ssk, cast on and cast off. However, if you are a beginner looking for a challenge, instructional photos are included throughout and a video link for the simple version of the jumper is included at the end of the pattern.
My First Jumper by Vicky Knits
What is Being Made
My First Jumper is a beginner-friendly oversized sweater pattern designed as a simple introduction to knitting garment construction. This downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer Vicky Knits offers a 2-in-1 design concept, allowing knitters to create either a classic jumper or explore variations within a single pattern. The sweater is suitable for knitters of all experience levels, with the sample garment knit in size Small and pattern sizes ranging from XS to 3XL to accommodate various body measurements.
Construction Method
The jumper is constructed using a four-panel flat knitting method with straight needles, making it an ideal project for beginners learning garment assembly. The pattern pieces include one front panel, one back panel, and two sleeves that are knit individually and then seamed together. After all panels are joined, the garment is finished by weaving in the yarn ends. The design also features an optional ribbed neckline that can be incorporated into the final garment for added structure and comfort at the neck opening.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
My First Jumper teaches fundamental knitting skills essential for garment construction. The core techniques required include:
- Knit stitch – the basic foundation stitch used throughout the garment
- Purl stitch – creating texture and structure within the panels
- 1x1 ribbing – used for the optional neckline finish and providing elasticity
- Knit 2 together (K2tog) – a basic decrease technique for shaping
- Slip, slip, knit (ssk) – an alternative decrease method for balanced shaping
- Cast on – beginning stitches for each panel
- Cast off – securing stitches at the end of each piece
For knitters seeking an additional challenge, the pattern includes a "level up" section that introduces intarsia knitting, a colorwork technique that allows for larger, more complex design motifs using separate yarn colors. This optional section provides instructional guidance for those ready to expand their skills beyond basic garment knitting.
Materials and Specifications
My First Jumper is designed to be knit in super chunky weight yarn, which allows the project to be completed in approximately one week, making it an achievable goal for new knitters. The pattern is worked on straight needles, the traditional tool for flat panel construction. While the primary yarn weight is specified as super chunky, the pattern includes measurements and guidance for adapting the design to different yarn weights, offering flexibility for yarn substitution based on personal preference or stash availability.
Difficulty Level and Learning Outcomes
Rated as a beginner-level pattern, My First Jumper is structured to build confidence in new knitters through manageable steps and clear instruction. The pattern includes instructional photographs throughout to guide knitters through each stage of construction, and a video link is provided for additional visual reference. This comprehensive support system makes the pattern accessible even to those picking up knitting needles for the first time, while the optional intarsia section offers an engaging next step for those ready to develop intermediate skills.
