Muladhara Yoga Socks by N.kaBia

What is Being Made

The Muladhara Yoga socks are a pair of knitted socks designed in multiple sizes to fit EU shoe sizes 36/37, 38/39, 40/41, 42/43, and 44/45. This downloadable knitting pattern creates fitted socks using the traditional top-down method worked in the round on double-pointed needles.

Craft and Primary Technique

This project uses knitting as both the primary and sole craft. The socks are knitted in the round using the circular knitting method with double-pointed needles, which is a classic technique for creating seamless, fitted legwear. The pattern demonstrates intermediate difficulty, indicating that knitters should have foundational skills in casting on, working in the round, and reading stitch patterns before beginning this project.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques

The Muladhara Yoga socks employ several fundamental knitting stitches:

  • Knit stitch – used throughout the leg and body of the sock
  • Purl stitch – incorporated into the ribbed cuff section
  • Ribbing – specifically knit 2, purl 2 ribbing worked for rounds 1 through 20 to create the elastic cuff that holds the socks in place around the leg
  • Cable work – the pattern includes charted cable stitch sections worked in the middle 30 stitches, requiring the use of a cable needle to create textured, twisted stitch patterns
  • Stranded colorwork – the pattern alternates between two solid colorways (colour A and colour B) in every round from round 3 onward, creating a two-color patterned design

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Muladhara Yoga socks are designed to be knitted with fingering weight yarn, classified as 4-ply yarn. The pattern requires 2 x 50g balls of sockyarn in two different solid colorways, totaling 100 grams and providing approximately 420 meters (459 yards) of yardage. This yardage is sufficient for completing both socks in the specified sizes.

Tools and Notions Required

To complete the Muladhara Yoga socks, knitters will need the following equipment:

  • 5 double-pointed needles (DPNs) in size 2.5 mm (US 1.5) – the five needles allow for even distribution of stitches across four needles while the fifth needle is used for knitting
  • Cable needle – essential for working the cable stitch sections that create textured pattern details
  • 2 stitch markers (optional but recommended) – used to mark the beginning of rounds and track pattern repeats
  • Darning needle – for weaving in yarn ends after completing the socks

Construction Overview

The socks are constructed using a top-down approach, beginning with casting on 60, 64, 68, or 72 stitches depending on the selected size. Stitches are divided evenly across four needles, with 15, 16, 17, or 18 stitches per needle respectively. The cuff section is worked first in colour A only using knit 2, purl 2 ribbing for 20 rounds to create an elastic, fitted opening. Following the cuff, the leg section begins and introduces the two-color stranded colorwork pattern, with knitters alternating between colour A and colour B in every round. The charted cable pattern is worked across the middle 30 stitches, creating a decorative focal point on the front of the sock.
