Mozy Cardigan by Fluffy Su Don
What is Being Made
The Mozy Cardigan is a top-down knitted cardigan designed for infants and children, available in ten sizes ranging from newborn (0/3 months) through 7 years old. The garment features a classic cardigan silhouette with button-front closure and is constructed using a combination of flat and circular knitting techniques. Hip circumference ranges from 45cm for the smallest size to 69cm for the largest, with back lengths varying from approximately 34cm to 54cm depending on size.
Construction Technique
The Mozy Cardigan is worked flat and top-down, beginning at the neckline and progressing downward. After the initial yoke shaping, the pattern divides the piece into separate sections for the body and sleeves. The body is worked flat in rows, while the sleeves are worked in the round using circular needles, creating a seamless construction for these sections. This mixed approach combines the ease of flat knitting for the main body with the efficiency of circular knitting for the sleeves.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques Used
The pattern employs several fundamental knitting stitches and techniques suitable for a beginner-level project:
- Stocking stitch (also called stockinette stitch) forms the primary fabric, created by alternating knit rows on the right side with purl rows on the wrong side
- Raglan increases (RI) are used to shape the yoke, worked symmetrically on both sides of marked raglan lines
- Yarn overs (YO) create decorative increases and are incorporated into the raglan shaping
- Knit 2 together (K2TOG) decreases stitches
- Slip, slip, knit (SSK) provides a left-leaning decrease
- Make 1 knit away (M1A) creates an increase stitch
- Purl through back loop (PTBL) adds textural variation
- Markers and stitch holders are essential accessories for tracking raglan lines and holding stitches during construction
Materials and Gauge
The Mozy Cardigan is designed to be worked in Yarn Art Jeans yarn with varied weight. Yardage requirements range from 350m to 800m depending on the size selected, with skein quantities ranging from 2 skeins for the smallest sizes to 6 skeins for the largest. The pattern requires circular needles in 40cm and 60cm lengths and double-pointed needles, both in 3.5mm and 2.5mm sizes. The recommended gauge is 24 stitches by 30 rows over 10cm by 10cm in stocking stitch on 3mm needles after blocking, which is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as beginner level, making it an accessible project for knitters new to garment construction. While it incorporates raglan shaping and mixed knitting methods, the techniques used are foundational and well-suited to developing knitting skills.
