Product Description
It’s the perfect time of year to knit a new hat for yourself or as a holiday gift, and this hat can be knit in three sizes!
Reminiscent of Art Deco mosaic tile, this unisex hat looks great with a pom or without. Fast and fun, the written pattern has a chart simple enough for even those of you new to stranded colorwork.
The hat has a ribbed brim and instructions for additional striping after the brim to lengthen the hat for more of a ski-toque look or slouchy look.
*** Be sure to check your gauge in the round before working this pattern; some stretch will be possible with blocking, but the pattern is pretty true to size pre-blocking.
Mosaic Hat by Keya Kuhn
What Is Being Made
Mosaic is a knitted hat pattern designed by Keya Kuhn that features colorwork elements. The hat is available in three sizes: Small (18 inches / 45.7 cm), Medium (20 inches / 50.8 cm), and Large (22 inches / 55.9 cm in circumference). This downloadable PDF pattern is suitable for beginner-level knitters and uses straightforward knitting techniques to create a finished hat with visual interest through the use of multiple yarn colors.
Craft and Techniques
Mosaic is a knitting project worked in the round using circular needles. The pattern employs colorwork techniques to create a mosaic-like visual effect on the finished hat. The construction method involves working with multiple yarn colors held together or in sequence to build the patterned design. Non-superwash wool is recommended for colorwork sections, as superwash-treated fibers may not remain secure inside the hat after repeated washing and wear.
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches appropriate for beginners:
- Knit (K): The basic knit stitch forms the foundation of the fabric
- Stocking stitch: Used as the primary fabric structure with a gauge of 28 stitches by 22 rows over 4 inches
- SSK (Slip, Slip, Knit): A left-leaning decrease stitch created by slipping two stitches knitwise individually, then knitting the two slipped stitches together
- Cable pattern stitch: Referenced in the gauge specification, adding textural variation to the hat
Materials and Yarn Weight
The Mosaic hat is worked in DK weight yarn or Cedar Hill Farm Company Single Sheep held double. Three distinct yarn colors are required:
- M1 (Primary color): 40 (43, 45) grams for sizes S (M, L)
- M2 (Second, darker color): 37 (40, 42) grams for sizes S (M, L)
- M3 (Third, lightest color): 28 (30, 32) grams for sizes S (M, L)
The pattern requires circular needles in two sizes: US 4 (3.5 mm) and US 6 (4 mm), available in either 16-inch or 24-inch lengths. The use of two needle sizes allows for adjustments in tension and fabric density throughout the hat construction.
