Moody Shawl by Michelle Krause
What is Being Made
The Moody Shawl is a triangular worsted weight shawl designed by Michelle Krause and available as a downloadable knitting pattern from Leah Michelle Designs. This top-down construction shawl is worked in three deep colours to express mood and personality through color selection. The finished piece is described as warm and cozy, making it an ideal accessory for cool days.
Design and Construction
This shawl features a top-down triangular construction, which is a popular method for shawl knitting that allows knitters to work from the neck or center point outward, gradually increasing stitches to create the triangular shape. The top-down approach provides flexibility in sizing, as knitters can try on the shawl as they work and bind off when they reach their desired dimensions.
Stitches and Techniques Used
The Moody Shawl incorporates a variety of knitting techniques to create visual interest and texture:
- Stockinette stitch forms the base fabric, providing a smooth, classic knitted surface
- Eyelet lace adds delicate openwork details throughout the design
- Colourwork is integrated into the pattern, allowing the three chosen colours to create depth and mood
- Knit 2 together (k2tog) decreases are used to shape the shawl
- Make 1 Left (M1L) and Make 1 Right (M1R) increases create the expanding triangular shape and contribute to lace patterning
Materials Required
This pattern calls for worsted weight yarn in three deep colours of the knitter's choice. Knitters will need appropriate needles for worsted weight yarn, and a marker to track pattern repeats and shaping points throughout the construction.
Skill Level
The Moody Shawl is rated as an intermediate difficulty pattern. Knitters should be comfortable with basic decreases and increases, able to follow multi-row stitch patterns, and familiar with reading knitting abbreviations and pattern instructions. The combination of colourwork, lace elements, and shaping techniques makes this an excellent project for knitters looking to expand their skills beyond beginner level.
