Product Description

Autumn and winter call for coziness and warm socks – these socks, worked with two strands of fingering weight yarn or one strand of DK weight yarn, are done within a short time. The ribbed pattern keeps the interest going.

They can be worked two-at-a-time (2AAT) or just one after the other, but are designed to be easy to work up 2AAT on a long circular needle.

The socks are worked toe-up, using Judy's Magic Cast on (links are provided) and a short row heel. If you are a comfortable sock knitter, feel free to replace the heel with the one you prefer.

The ribbed pattern is shown on charts.

Mom's Socks by Dieuwke Schack-Mulligen

What Is Being Made

Mom's socks are a cozy pair of knitted socks designed for autumn and winter wear. Created by designer Dieuwke Schack-Mulligen, these socks are worked in three sizes—Small (approximately EUR 37-38/US 6-7), Medium (approximately EUR 39-40/US 8-9), and Large (approximately EUR 41-42/US 10-11)—to accommodate different foot measurements. The pattern is engineered for quick completion, making it an ideal project for crafters seeking fast results without sacrificing comfort or style.

Knitting Techniques

Mom's socks employ flexible construction methods to suit various knitting preferences. The pattern is designed to be worked two-at-a-time (2AAT) on a long circular needle, a technique that allows knitters to create both socks simultaneously and ensure matching gauge and fit. Alternatively, the socks can be worked individually one after the other. For knitters who prefer traditional methods, the pattern accommodates magic loop knitting or double-pointed needles (DPNs). The socks are worked in the round, creating seamless, tubular fabric ideal for comfortable footwear. Sizing is determined by measurement in length rather than row gauge, which streamlines the construction process and reduces the need for precise row counting.

Stitches and Construction

While the PDF content does not specify particular stitch patterns or decorative elements, the socks are constructed using fundamental knitting stitches worked in rounds. The pattern emphasizes straightforward construction suitable for intermediate-level knitters, balancing accessibility with the satisfaction of completing a wearable project efficiently.

Materials and Yarn

Mom's socks offer flexible yarn options to accommodate different stash preferences and yarn weights. The pattern calls for approximately 250 meters of yarn in total. Knitters may choose between two strands of fingering weight yarn or a single strand of DK weight yarn. The original design features a combination of Wollmeise 100% Merino in the colorway Ruby Thursday paired with Araucania Ranco Solid in colorway 103. However, any combination of two fingering weight yarns or a single DK weight yarn will work, providing creative flexibility for personalization. The recommended needle size is 4mm (US 6), suitable for DPNs or circular needles depending on your chosen knitting method. Additional notions include stitch markers for marking the beginning of each round and a darning needle for weaving in ends upon completion.

Difficulty Level

Rated as an intermediate project, Mom's socks are accessible to knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle sock construction. The straightforward design and flexible techniques make this pattern an excellent choice for expanding your sock-knitting repertoire.
