Moda Fabrics Wild Orchid Quilt Pattern – Downloadable PDF Summary

The Moda Fabrics Wild Orchid Quilt is a stunning intermediate-level quilting project that finishes at a generous 66" x 72", making it an ideal lap or throw quilt. Designed by Moda Fabrics, this pattern combines traditional pieced patchwork with decorative fabric appliqué to create a bold floral centerpiece surrounded by structured borders and blocks. The pattern is available as a free downloadable PDF and includes printed templates for the appliqué work.

What Is Being Made

The finished project is a quilted throw measuring 66 inches wide by 72 inches tall. The design features a central appliquéd orchid motif framed by a cream patchwork panel, which is then surrounded by pieced borders incorporating strip sets, half-square triangles, and corner units. The overall effect is a garden-inspired quilt with rich floral detail at its heart and coordinating geometric piecing throughout the surrounding borders.

Construction Overview

The quilt is built in distinct construction phases, beginning at the center and working outward. Each stage is carefully measured and pressed before the next is added, ensuring accurate alignment throughout the build.

Step 1 – Center Patchwork Panel

The foundation of the quilt begins with a simple but precise patchwork grid. Twenty assorted cream 6½" squares are arranged and sewn into 5 rows of 4 squares each. Rows are pressed in alternating directions to reduce bulk at the seams, then joined to create a center panel measuring 24½" x 30½" unfinished.

Step 2 – Inner Cream Border

Narrow cream strips are added to frame the patchwork center. 1½" x 30½" strips are attached to the sides first, followed by 1½" x 26½" strips on the top and bottom. This brings the center unit to 26½" x 32½" unfinished and creates a clean visual boundary before the appliqué is applied.

Step 3 – Center Orchid Appliqué

This is the signature design element of the Wild Orchid Quilt. Using the enclosed templates provided in the PDF, quilters cut orchid shapes from assorted print fabrics and apply them to the cream center panel using their appliqué method of choice. The pattern does not prescribe a single appliqué technique, giving makers the flexibility to use fusible web appliqué, needle-turn appliqué, freezer paper appliqué, or any other preferred approach. This makes the pattern adaptable to a wide range of skill sets within the intermediate level.

Techniques Used

  • Patchwork piecing – assembling square grids and strip sets with precise ¼" seam allowances
  • Fabric appliqué – applying shaped orchid pieces to the quilt center using template-guided cutting
  • Strip piecing – cutting and sewing 2½" x 21" strips from fat eighths to form efficient strip sets for border units
  • Half-square triangle (HST) construction – using 3" squares to create half-triangle squares for border detail
  • Corner unit construction – incorporating 2½" squares as corner accents within the pieced borders
  • Pressing technique – pressing seams in the direction indicated by diagrams, with alternating row pressing to reduce bulk

Stitches and Sewing Details

  • ¼" seam allowance is used consistently throughout all piecing steps
  • Appliqué stitching method is left to the maker's discretion – options include hand blanket stitch, machine satin stitch, or invisible machine appliqué
  • Standard straight-stitch machine sewing is used for all patchwork and border assembly

Materials – Fabric Requirements
