Project Overview
The Mini Solutions Two Scarf is a knitted accessory designed to make creative use of gradient yarn kits and mini skeins. This intermediate-level knitting pattern provides a practical solution for crafters who have leftover yarn from previous projects or specialty mini yarn collections. The design is fully adjustable, allowing knitters to work with whatever yardage and color combinations they have available.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a sideways asymmetrical triangle scarf with a finished wingspan of 92 inches and a depth at the center of 13 inches after wet blocking. The scarf is knit on the bias, which creates an interesting diagonal construction that showcases color changes beautifully, particularly when working with gradient or multi-color mini kits.
Yarn and Materials
Yarn Requirements: The pattern uses approximately 530 yards of fingering-weight yarn total. The design is specifically engineered to work with gradient or mini kits containing 106 yards in 5 different colors, though yardage and color quantities can be adjusted based on available materials. The sample scarf was knit using Euro Sock Minis by MadTosh, which are 100% Merino fiber in the Wanderer colorway.
Needles and Notions: Knitters will need US size 5 (3.75 mm) circular needles in a length suitable for holding a large number of stitches. Additional notions include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, 2 stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats, and a safety pin or removable marker for marking important points in the construction.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The primary stitch used throughout this pattern is Garter Stitch, which creates a textured, reversible fabric with horizontal ridges. Garter Stitch is formed by knitting every row, making it an accessible choice for intermediate knitters while still producing an elegant finished garment.
The scarf is constructed using a sideways knitting method, where the piece is worked horizontally rather than from top to bottom. This approach, combined with the asymmetrical triangle shaping, allows the scarf to be knit on the bias. Bias knitting creates a naturally stretchy fabric with beautiful drape and is particularly effective for showcasing color transitions in gradient or multi-colored yarns.
Pattern Requirements: This pattern demands careful stitch counting throughout the construction process, as the shaping relies on accurate stitch management. The adjustable nature of the pattern means knitters must be comfortable modifying stitch counts based on their available yardage.
Gauge and Finished Measurements
The pattern specifies a gauge of 21 stitches over 4 inches (10 cm) in Garter Stitch after wet blocking. However, the pattern notes that gauge is not overly critical to the project's success. Variations in gauge will alter both the yardage requirements and the finished measurements, allowing flexibility for different yarn weights or personal tension variations.
Skill Level and Adjustability
Rated as an intermediate knitting project, this pattern is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle shaping and stitch management. The fully adjustable design makes it an excellent pattern for using up yarn stash, making it particularly valuable for crafters who enjoy working with mini skeins, gradient kits, or leftover fingering-weight yarn from other projects.
