Product Description

A great way to play with color and look like you’ve got lots of stranded knitting going on without all that stranding. Both vests use the same slip stitch pattern with two yarns in painted or self-striping colors. The length of the color sequence in each yarn is very different, with very different results. And even though both yarns are classified as the same yarn weight and use the same size needles, the gauge and resulting measurements are different, too. A good study in how yarns may not always be perfectly substitutable even when labeled the same weight. The body of each vest is worked back and forth in one piece to the armholes, when the fronts and backs are divided.

Millefiori Vest by Therese Chynoweth

What is Being Made

The Millefiori Vest is a knitted waistcoat designed by Therese Chynoweth as an intermediate-level project. This garment is available in two silhouettes: a standard vest and a cropped vest option. Both versions feature a scooped neckline and are designed as standard-fitting pieces. The standard vest offers finished bust measurements ranging from 33 inches (XS) to 53½ inches (2XL), with lengths from 18 inches to 21¾ inches depending on size. The cropped vest provides the same size range with shorter lengths, measuring from 13¾ inches to 17½ inches. Both styles are constructed to be worn with a 4–6 inch positive ease, meaning the finished bust measurement should be 4–6 inches larger than your actual bust measurement for proper fit.

Techniques and Construction

This knitting project employs a slip stitch pattern worked allover throughout the vest. The slip stitch technique creates a textured, dimensional fabric that is characteristic of colorwork knitting. This method involves slipping stitches from one row to the next rather than knitting them, which produces a dense, elastic fabric with excellent drape and structure—ideal for a fitted waistcoat silhouette. The slip stitch pattern is worked in multiple colors, creating visual interest while maintaining the structural integrity of the garment.

Stitches Used

  • Slip stitch – the primary stitch throughout the allover pattern
  • Standard knit and purl stitches for ribbing and edge finishing
  • Buttonband stitches for the buttoned closure

Yarn and Materials

The Millefiori Vest is worked in fingering weight yarn, also classified as Super Fine (#1 weight). This fine yarn weight allows for detailed stitch definition and creates a refined, tailored appearance appropriate for a fitted waistcoat. The pattern uses multiple yarn colors: a main color (MC) and two contrasting colors (CC1 and CC2). Yardage requirements vary by size and vest style. For the standard vest in size Small, approximately 376 yards of main color yarn, 280 yards of the first contrasting color, and 81 yards of the second contrasting color are needed. Larger sizes require proportionally more yardage. The pattern is formatted as a downloadable PDF, making it accessible for independent knitters.

Skill Level

This project is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience who are comfortable working with colorwork techniques, managing multiple yarn colors, and following detailed stitch instructions. The slip stitch colorwork pattern requires attention to detail and familiarity with color changes, but the straightforward vest construction provides a manageable structure for developing these skills.
