Product Description
Cozy, soft and warm - just like a freshly baked milk bun - this pouf is one of the things that can transform a house into a home.
Milk Bun Pouf is full of lovely texture that is easy and entertaining to knit. Cable twists appear only once in ten rows but add a lot of visual interest. Super bulky yarn makes this project a satisfying and fast knit, while well-thought-through design looks great from any side.
There is an opening at the bottom to make stuffing the pouf easier. It is secured with a drawstring and is almost invisible. The opening lets you remove the filling and wash the pouf, or add more filling if needed later.
- The pouf is knit from the top down in the round. Increases shape the top, and symmetric decreases - the bottom.
- Pattern contains both written instructions and charts.
- Gauge: 11sts and 15 rows in 4” / 10cm in Stockinette
- Recommended needles: US 13 / 9mm circulars on 32-47” / 80-120cm cable
Milk Bun Pouf by Ksenia Naidyon / Life Is Cozy
Project Overview
The Milk Bun Pouf is a knitted home décor piece designed to add cozy texture and warmth to any living space. Inspired by the soft, pillowy appearance of a freshly baked milk bun, this pouf combines visual interest with straightforward knitting techniques, making it an ideal intermediate-level project for knitters seeking a satisfying, quick-to-complete creation.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a cylindrical pouf measuring 12 inches high by 18 inches in diameter, a functional and decorative cushion suitable for use as a footrest, extra seating, or accent piece in home décor. The finished pouf showcases lovely texture throughout, providing both visual appeal and tactile comfort.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Milk Bun Pouf employs cable twists as its primary decorative element. These cable twists appear strategically throughout the pattern—occurring only once every ten rows—which allows them to create significant visual interest without overwhelming the knitter with complex stitch work. The base fabric is worked in Stockinette stitch, a fundamental knitting technique that creates the smooth, classic V-pattern texture characteristic of many knitted garments and home goods.
The cable work requires the use of a cable needle, a specialized tool used to temporarily hold stitches while crossing them over other stitches to create the twisted, rope-like cable patterns. This intermediate technique adds dimension and sophistication to the piece while remaining accessible to knitters with basic cable experience.
Yarn and Materials
The Milk Bun Pouf is designed for super bulky yarn, which significantly accelerates the knitting process and creates a satisfying, quick-to-complete project. The pattern requires approximately 700 yards of super bulky yarn, though the exact yardage depends on individual gauge.
The recommended gauge is 11 stitches and 15 rows over 4 inches in Stockinette stitch. The sample pouf shown in the pattern was created using Loops & Threads Cozy Wool in the Pewter colorway—a yarn blend of 50% wool and 50% acrylic, with each skein weighing 4.5 ounces and containing 90 yards.
Knitters have flexibility in yarn selection: any super bulky yarn meeting the specified gauge will work for this project. Alternatively, knitters can hold together multiple strands of thinner yarn to achieve the same gauge and finished dimensions, allowing for creative color combinations and yarn substitutions.
Needles and Notions
The pattern calls for knitting needles sized to achieve the specified gauge—knitters should swatch to determine the appropriate needle size for their chosen yarn, as the pattern provides US 1 as a suggestion rather than a fixed requirement. Additional tools needed include:
- Cable needle for executing cable twists
- 8 stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping
- Tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and finishing
- Small safety pin or crochet hook for threading and securing stitches during construction
Difficulty Level
Rated as an intermediate project, the Milk Bun Pouf is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to incorporate cable techniques into their work. The infrequent cable twists and straightforward Stockinette stitch base make this an excellent stepping stone for knitters developing their cable expertise without requiring constant attention to complex stitch patterns.
