Mikkel Knitted Sweater by HelstrupDesign

What is Being Made

Mikkel is a knitted sweater designed by HelstrupDesign, available in six sizes ranging from S to XXXL. This intermediate-level knitting project produces a finished garment with chest widths from 109 to 146 centimeters and lengths from 65 to 77 centimeters, making it a versatile pullover suitable for various body types and fit preferences.

Knitting Techniques Used

The Mikkel sweater employs several fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate crafters. The garment is constructed using the popular circular knitting method, which allows for seamless construction and continuous rounds of knitting. The pattern incorporates ribbed sections, typically used at cuffs, necklines, and hem edges to create elasticity and a finished appearance. Cable pattern work forms a central design element, requiring knitters to manipulate stitches to create textured, twisted columns that add visual interest and depth to the finished piece.

Stitches and Stitch Details

The primary stitch pattern featured in Mikkel is a cable pattern, which requires careful attention to stitch manipulation and crossing. The gauge for the cable pattern is specified as 24 stitches and 34 rows per 10 by 10 centimeters (4 by 4 inches), providing a standard measurement for knitters to achieve proper fit. Ribbed knitting, typically alternating knit and purl stitches, is used for the elastic sections of the garment. Knitters must maintain consistent tension throughout to ensure the cables remain even and the ribbed sections provide appropriate stretch.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

Mikkel is designed to be worked in aran-weight yarn, a medium-weight classification that creates a fabric with good drape and warmth. The pattern calls for approximately 600 to 1000 grams of yarn depending on the chosen size, with a yardage requirement of roughly 90 meters per 50 grams. HelstrupDesign recommends wool or wool-blend yarns such as Jamieson's Shetland Heather or Peer Gynt from Sandnes, both of which are traditional choices known for their durability and elasticity in knitted garments.

Needles and Notions

The pattern requires multiple circular needles and double-pointed needles in two sizes to accommodate different sections of the sweater. For the main body and cable pattern work, knitters use 3½ millimeter circular needles in both 60 or 80 centimeter and 40 centimeter lengths. For the ribbed sections, including cuffs and hem, 3 millimeter circular needles in the same length options are used, or alternatively, 3 millimeter double-pointed needles. Essential notions include stitch markers to denote pattern repeats and the beginning of rounds, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends after completion. Knitters should select needle sizes based on their individual gauge, as tension varies among crafters and proper gauge is essential for achieving the specified finished measurements.
