Miami Vice Shawl by Threebagsfulled

What is Being Made

Miami Vice is an original knitted shawl design created by Threebagsfulled (© Hilary Designs 2011). This intermediate-level shawl project features a distinctive construction method that begins with a small cast-on edge and builds into a larger garment through strategic increases and pick-up stitches, making it an engaging project for knitters with some experience.

Construction Method and Techniques

The shawl uses an innovative building technique that starts with a minimal cast-on of just 3 stitches. The pattern begins by knitting 13 rows in garter stitch, then incorporates pick-up-and-knit techniques to create a foundational lump of 12 stitches from both the garter edge and the cast-on edge. This method allows knitters to develop a shawl from a small, manageable starting point that expands through the yoke section.

The yoke construction involves multiple rows of patterned knitting that create shaping and visual interest. The pattern includes two different yoke variations depending on yarn weight selection, allowing knitters to customize their finished piece based on their chosen materials.

Stitches Used

  • Knit (K) – the fundamental stitch throughout the pattern
  • Purl (P) – used in the yoke section to create texture and pattern definition
  • Yarn over (yo) – creates decorative eyelet holes and contributes to shaping increases
  • Knit front and back (kf&b) – an increase technique that adds stitches within the fabric
  • Knit two together (K2tog) – a decrease stitch for shaping
  • Pick up and knit (p/u&k) – used to add stitches from existing edges, a key technique in the initial construction phase
  • Garter stitch – the textured base created by knitting every row

Materials and Needle Requirements

Miami Vice offers flexibility in yarn selection to suit different preferences and finished weights.

Worsted Weight Option: Knitters may use any worsted weight yarn requiring a minimum of 560 yards. For heavier worsted yarns, Size 11 circular needles are recommended. For lighter worsted yarns, Size 10½ circular needles work best. This flexibility allows crafters to achieve different drape and density in their finished shawl.

Fingering Weight Alternative: The pattern also accommodates Wolle's Color Changing 4 ply fingering weight cotton, requiring one Mega Skein (865 yards) and Size 7 circular needles. This option provides a lighter, more delicate finished garment suitable for warmer climates or layering.

Circular needles are essential for this project, enabling the pick-up-and-knit construction method and accommodating the expanding stitch count as the shawl develops.

Pattern Format

Miami Vice is available as a free, downloadable PDF pattern, making it accessible to knitters seeking an intermediate-level shawl project with creative construction techniques and material flexibility.
