Product Description

Amazingly from one mini Opal sock yarn ball (10g) you can get four cards, two pairs of socks and two hats - even the pom-poms!

The pattern is worked flat and there is a small amount of short row shaping for the heel of the sock, just follow the instructions and it will work!

I have sold this pattern as a kit for a couple of years and suddenly realised I had never put the pattern online, so I hope you enjoy it!

You could use any yarn, I can't wait to see what you make!

Merry Knitmas Christmas Cards by Sue Stratford

Project Overview

Create personalized Christmas greeting cards by knitting miniature decorative pieces to attach to card blanks. This downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer Sue Stratford offers a beginner-friendly approach to combining knitting with card-making, allowing crafters to produce handmade festive greetings using small quantities of yarn.

What You'll Create

The pattern includes instructions for knitting small decorative elements—including socks and hats—that can be mounted onto four pre-made greeting cards with matching envelopes. Each design is worked from a single 10g ball of yarn, leaving plenty of material for completing multiple cards or experimenting with color variations.

Materials Required

  • 10g ball of Opal Sock yarn (4-ply weight)
  • 2.5mm knitting needles
  • Four greetings cards with envelopes
  • Strong glue for attaching knitted pieces to cards

Knitting Techniques Covered

This beginner pattern introduces several fundamental knitting techniques essential for creating shaped, three-dimensional pieces:

  • Knit Through Back of Loop (K1tbl) — Working through the back loop rather than the front, creating a twisted stitch effect
  • Knit Two Together (K2tog) — A basic decrease technique for shaping
  • Wrap and Turn (W&T) — A short-row shaping method that prevents holes from appearing when turning work mid-row, essential for creating three-dimensional forms like hats and socks
  • Make One (M1) — An increase technique created by twisting a backwards loop onto the right-hand needle

Stitches and Abbreviations

  • K — Knit stitch
  • K1tbl — Knit one stitch through the back of the loop
  • K2tog — Knit two stitches together
  • W&T — Wrap and turn
  • M1 — Make one increase

Yarn and Needle Specifications

The pattern uses Opal Sock yarn, a 4-ply weight that is ideal for fine detail work and creates delicate, finished pieces. The 2.5mm needles are appropriately sized for this yarn weight, producing a fabric with good stitch definition suitable for small decorative items. The generous yardage in a 10g ball allows crafters to complete multiple card designs without running short of material.

Skill Level

Rated as beginner-friendly, this pattern is accessible to knitters new to shaping techniques. The wrap and turn technique is explained in detail to help prevent common mistakes, making it an excellent introduction to short-row shaping for those just beginning to explore beyond basic flat knitting.
