Merina Doll by Sophia Minakais

Project Overview

The Merina Doll is an intermediate-level knitting project designed to create a life-sized companion doll perfect for toddlers and young children. Standing 33 inches tall with a foot length of 5 inches, this doll is large enough to wear children's clothing, sit in a chair, and hold hands while walking. Created by designer Sophia Minakais, the Merina represents a thoughtful approach to handmade toys that grow with a child's imagination.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

This project employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate-level crafters. The doll is constructed using a combination of straight needles and double-pointed needles (DPNs), allowing for both flat and circular knitting sections. The construction method accommodates the doll's substantial size while maintaining structural integrity through strategic yarn choices and stuffing techniques.

The pattern utilizes stitch markers and stitch holders to manage multiple sections during construction, and includes optional crochet hook integration for finishing details. A tapestry needle is essential for seaming pieces together and weaving in yarn ends throughout the assembly process.

Yarn Materials and Weight

The Merina Doll pattern calls for a combination of bulky and worsted weight yarns in multiple colors to create distinct body parts and features:

  • Cream Bulky Yarn: 400 yards of bulky weight yarn forms the primary body base, providing structure and warmth to the finished doll
  • Pink Worsted Weight Yarn: 420 yards creates the skin tone and facial features
  • Brown Worsted Weight Yarn: 210 yards for hair construction
  • Red Worsted Weight Yarn: 180 yards for clothing or accent details
  • Black Worsted Weight Yarn: 65 yards for eyes and fine details

The pattern is shown using Malabrigo Chunky (100% Merino Wool, 100 yards per hank) in Natural (#63) for the cream sections, and Malabrigo Worsted (100% Merino Wool, 210 yards per hank) in Strawberry Fields (#503), Rich Chocolate (#161), Black (#195), and Geranio (#44). These premium natural fiber yarns provide softness and durability suitable for a child's toy.

Needles and Tools

The pattern requires two needle sizes to accommodate the different yarn weights:

  • US 8 (5 mm) needles: Used for worsted weight yarn sections
  • US 10.5 (6.5 mm) needles: Used for bulky yarn sections

Both straight needles and double-pointed needles are needed in these sizes. Additional tools include a tapestry needle for finishing, stitch markers for tracking pattern sections, stitch holders for managing active stitches, and optionally a crochet hook for edge finishing or embellishment.

Stuffing and Safety

The doll requires 16 ounces of cotton stuffing to achieve its finished dimensions and ensure a safe, washable toy. The pattern specifies Organic Cotton Plus Raw Cotton Stuffing, which is appropriate for a toy intended for young children, offering both safety and quality construction.

Finished Dimensions

Upon completion, the Merina Doll measures 33 inches in height with 5-inch feet, creating a doll that is proportionally scaled to a toddler's size and capable of wearing standard children's clothing.
