Maze Clutch Bag by coolwooldesign

Project Overview

The Maze Clutch is a versatile crochet bag designed by Carol Ibbetson that serves multiple purposes as a purse, notions bag, or general storage accessory. This downloadable PDF pattern provides comprehensive instructions for creating a structured clutch using intermediate-level crochet techniques. The bag is constructed in one continuous piece worked from the top down, incorporating mosaic crochet methods and professional finishing details including a functional zipper and optional fabric lining.

What Is Being Made

This pattern creates a finished clutch bag suitable for everyday use or specialized storage. The design accommodates various handle options: a short handle can be attached directly to the zipper for a compact carry style, or a longer handle can be attached to each side of the bag for more versatile wearing options. The finished piece functions as a practical accessory for organizing small items, carrying notions and craft supplies, or serving as a compact purse.

Crochet Techniques Used

  • Mosaic Crochet: The primary construction method employs mosaic crochet techniques, a colorwork approach that creates geometric patterns through strategic stitch placement across two rows per color. This technique allows for intricate design work while maintaining structural integrity.
  • Top-Down Construction: The bag is worked from the opening downward in a single continuous piece, eliminating the need for multiple seaming steps and creating a seamless construction method.
  • Zipper Integration: Detailed instructions explain how to join a zipper as you crochet, incorporating the closure element directly into the fabric rather than attaching it afterward.
  • Handle Creation: Two methods are provided for creating the handle: using a fringe twister tool for consistent results or twisting by hand for a more traditional approach.
  • Optional Lining: The pattern includes instructions for adding a fabric lining to the interior of the bag, providing a finished appearance and added durability.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques

The pattern utilizes fundamental crochet stitches combined with mosaic crochet methodology. The mosaic technique specifically involves working with slip stitches and single crochet stitches in a coordinated pattern across two rows per color, creating the geometric maze design while maintaining consistent fabric density and structure.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Maze Clutch pattern accommodates DK to Worsted weight yarn, offering flexibility in material selection. The sample was created using Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton, a 100% mercerized cotton yarn available in 100g balls with 170 meters (186 yards) per ball. The sample utilized two colorways: Yarn A in Purple (147) and Yarn B in Lemon (157), with actual yardage consumption of approximately 37g for the featured version. Cotton yarn is recommended for this project, providing structure, breathability, and a professional finish suitable for a clutch bag.

Crochet hooks appropriate for the chosen yarn weight are required, along with a zipper for the closure and optional fabric for the lining. The pattern is presented as a downloadable PDF document, making it accessible for immediate use upon purchase.
