What you'll need

Product Description

*MAY* named after the month I finished the design. Knitted in 4 easy triangles. All the stitch patterns are easy and clearly written. The crochet border is entirely optional and easy. I haven't added any details for it but it's easily found on youtube. A vert pretty blanket/shawl and would make a very nice gift for a new baby.

*MAY* Baby Blanket/Shawl Knitting Pattern

What is Being Made

The *MAY* Baby Blanket/Shawl is a versatile knitted blanket designed by Susan J Ward that functions as both a baby blanket and decorative shawl. This finished piece measures approximately 32 x 32 inches (82 x 82 centimeters), making it an ideal size for infant use or as a lightweight throw. The blanket is constructed using an innovative modular approach that simplifies the building process.

Construction Method and Techniques

This pattern employs a distinctive four-triangle construction method, which breaks down what might otherwise be a complex project into manageable, easy-to-follow sections. This approach is particularly beneficial for intermediate-level knitters, as it allows for logical progression and reduces the likelihood of errors across the entire piece. The modular triangle design creates visual interest while maintaining structural integrity throughout the blanket.

The pattern incorporates several specialized knitting techniques that add texture and sophistication to the finished garment. Yarn forward (Yfd) techniques are used to create deliberate yarn overs that contribute to the blanket's design. The pattern also features slip stitches worked as if to purl, which create subtle stitch definition and help maintain even edges. Advanced decrease techniques such as Ssssk (slip, slip, slip, slip, knit) are employed, where four stitches are slipped individually and then knitted together through the back loops, creating a decorative and controlled decrease that adds visual detail to the piece.

Stitches Used

  • Knit (K) – the fundamental stitch forming the base structure
  • Purl (P) – used to create textural variation and reverse stockinette sections
  • Yarn Round Needle (YRN) – creates deliberate eyelet holes and lace-like details
  • Yarn Forward (Yfd) – brings yarn to the front between needles to create yarn overs
  • Slip Stitch (Sl1) – slipped stitches worked as if to purl for edge definition
  • Decreases (Tog, K2tog, P2tog, Ssssk) – various decrease methods including knit two together, purl two together, and the four-stitch slip-slip-slip-slip-knit decrease
  • Make Bobble (MB) – a textured stitch created by working K1 P1 K1 P1 in the same stitch, then turning and decreasing back down to create a three-dimensional bobble effect

Materials and Tools

The *MAY* Baby Blanket/Shawl is worked in DK weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that provides excellent drape and is ideal for baby garments due to its softness and breathability. The total yarn requirement is 300 grams, which includes approximately 50 grams of contrast yarn for optional color work or accent details.

The primary tool required is one pair of 5mm knitting needles, which is the appropriate needle size for DK weight yarn and creates a fabric with good stitch definition and flexibility. Additionally, a 5mm crochet hook is included in the materials list for those who wish to add an optional crochet border to finish the edges. This border option allows knitters to customize the final appearance of their blanket, adding either a simple edging or a more elaborate crocheted frame depending on preference.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond the absolute beginner level. While the four-triangle modular construction simplifies the overall project, the inclusion of techniques such as bobble stitches, multiple decrease methods, and yarn overs requires solid foundational knitting skills and the ability to read and follow pattern instructions with confidence.
