Marian Darling Baby Dress by Taiga Hilliard Designs

What is Being Made

Marian Darling is a vintage-inspired baby dress designed as a top-down knit garment intended to become an heirloom piece passed down from baby to baby. The dress features a fitted chest with a decorative center lace panel and offers flexibility in sleeve length options, available in long, ¾ length, or short sleeves. The pattern includes eight sizes ranging from newborn through 4T-5T, with chest measurements from 14 inches to 24 inches.

Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting pattern employs several key techniques to achieve its vintage aesthetic and functional construction. The dress is worked using top-down construction, a method that allows knitters to try on the garment as it progresses and easily adjust length before binding off. The pattern incorporates lace work as a central design element, creating an elegant focal point down the front of the dress. Additionally, the pattern utilizes yarn overs and decreases to form the openwork lace pattern, requiring knitters to be comfortable with these fundamental lace-knitting techniques.

Stitches Used

The Marian Darling pattern features the Open Twist Pattern, which is worked flat across the rows. This stitch pattern creates visual interest through a combination of knit, purl, and yarn over stitches. The Open Twist Pattern is constructed with the following sequence:

  • Row 6 (Right Side): Purl 1, knit 1, yarn over, knit 1, repeated to the last stitch, purl 1
  • Row 7 (Wrong Side): Knit 1, purl 3, repeated to the last stitch, knit 1
  • Row 8 (Right Side): Purl 1, knit 3, pass the 3rd stitch over the 1st and 2nd stitches, repeated to the last stitch

This pattern creates a delicate twisted texture that contributes to the dress's heirloom quality. Knitters should note that rows 6 and 7 temporarily increase the stitch count, which returns to the correct number by row 9.

Materials and Specifications

Yarn: Anzula Lunaris in fingering weight (4-ply), which provides a fine, delicate fabric suitable for a baby garment. Yardage requirements vary by size: 400 yards for newborn, 450 yards for 3 months, 500 yards for 6 months, 550 yards for 12 months, 600 yards for 18 months, 700 yards for 2T, 800 yards for 3T, and 900 yards for 4T-5T.

Needles: US size 4 (3.50 mm) needles or the size required to achieve the specified gauge.

Gauge: 24 stitches over 4 inches in stockinette stitch. Achieving proper gauge is essential for the dress to fit correctly across the eight available sizes.

Notions: The pattern requires 4 to 5 buttons, depending on size, each measuring between ½ inch and ¾ inch in diameter. Newborn through 12-month sizes use 4 buttons, while 18-month and larger sizes use 5 buttons.
