Mandala Wall Hanging Crochet Pattern by Amanda Shaskey
Project Overview
This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for creating a decorative Mandala Wall Hanging using crochet techniques. The finished piece is designed to be displayed as a wall decoration, mounted on a 20cm metal ring or hoop for a polished, gallery-ready presentation. The mandala design combines geometric shaping with traditional crochet stitchwork, making it an ideal intermediate-level project for crafters looking to expand their skills with circular motif construction.
Craft Technique and Construction Method
This project is created using the crochet technique, worked in the round to build a symmetrical mandala pattern. The pattern is written using US crochet terminology, ensuring clarity for American crocheters. The construction method involves working consecutive rounds outward from a center point, gradually increasing stitches to create the characteristic mandala expansion. Gauge measurement is critical for this project—your completed Round 5 should measure approximately 3.25 inches (8 cm) when measured from chain-3 space between clusters to the opposite side's chain-3 space.
Stitches and Techniques Used
The pattern employs a variety of fundamental and intermediate crochet stitches to build texture and visual interest:
- Chain (CH) – used for foundation and spacing between stitch groups
- Slip Stitch (SL ST) – used to join rounds and create seamless transitions
- Single Crochet (SC) – provides a tight, dense stitch base
- Half Double Crochet (HDC) – offers medium height and drape
- Double Crochet (DC) – creates taller, more open fabric sections
- Triple Crochet (TC) – adds height and airiness to specific design elements
- Cluster – formed by working 3 double crochets together, creating a decorative raised element
- Popcorn Stitch – an advanced decorative technique involving 5 double crochets worked in the same stitch, then pulled closed to form a dimensional popcorn-like texture
The pattern uses standard crochet abbreviations including YO (yarn over) and ST (stitch). Round-by-round stitch counts are provided in brackets at the end of each round to help track progress and ensure proper shaping.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This mandala wall hanging requires minimal materials, making it an economical project:
- Yarn: 100% cotton, 4-ply weight (medium weight), requiring just 1x 50g ball. Crafters may use a single solid color for a classic look or combine different colors for a more vibrant, multi-colored mandala effect
- Hook: 2.50mm crochet hook, appropriately sized for 4-ply yarn to achieve proper gauge
- Hardware: 20cm metal ring or hoop for mounting and displaying the finished mandala
- Finishing Tools: yarn needle for weaving in ends and scissors for trimming
The choice of 100% cotton yarn provides a crisp, defined stitch definition ideal for showcasing the geometric mandala pattern, while the 4-ply weight offers manageability for intermediate crocheters working with intricate stitch combinations.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate, making it suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle more complex stitch combinations and circular construction. The inclusion of specialty stitches like popcorn and clusters, combined with round-by-round increases, requires attention to detail and familiarity with multiple stitch types, but remains accessible to dedicated crafters.
