Mallard Duck Crochet Pattern
What Is Being Made
The Mallard Duck is an intermediate-level amigurumi-style crochet project designed by Kerri's Crochet. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for creating a decorative crocheted mallard duck, complete with realistic coloring and detailing. The finished piece features a duck with distinct head, neck, body, and wings, suitable for display, gifting, or collection.
Craft and Technique Overview
This project uses the crochet technique throughout. Crochet is a fiber craft that creates fabric using a single hook to pull yarn loops through one another, forming interconnected stitches. The Mallard Duck pattern employs fundamental crochet methods including working in the round with magic loops, increasing and decreasing stitches to shape three-dimensional forms, and joining pieces together. The pattern includes a video tutorial available on Kerri's Crochet's YouTube channel, providing visual guidance alongside the written instructions.
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes several essential crochet stitches to construct the duck:
- Chain (ch) – the foundation stitch used to create base loops and turning chains
- Treble crochet (tr) – a tall stitch used in the initial rounds of the head to build height and structure
- Double crochet (dc) – a medium-height stitch used for shaping and detailing sections of the duck
- Half treble crochet (htr) – an intermediate-height stitch employed for specific shaping areas
- Slip stitch (sl st) – used to join rounds and create seamless transitions between sections
Materials and Tools
The Mallard Duck pattern requires DK weight yarn (also called light worsted in the US and double knit in the UK). Kerri's Crochet used 8 ply wool for the original design. The yarn colors needed are:
- Green – for the mallard drake's distinctive head coloring
- Brown – for body and wing details
- White – for neck and underside markings
- Orange – for the duck's beak and feet
Essential tools and notions include a 2.5mm crochet hook, scissors for cutting yarn, a sewing needle with matching cotton thread for attaching the wings to the body, a darning needle for weaving in loose ends, and black embroidery cotton or sewing thread for embroidering the eye. Alternatively, a small black bead may be substituted for the embroidered eye detail.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate, making it suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle projects involving shaping, color changes, and assembly. The pattern's intermediate classification reflects the need to understand stitch abbreviations, work in the round, manage multiple yarn colors, and join separate components into a finished piece.
