Product Description

The magical Malabar giant squirrel is one of the worlds' largest squirrels, a distinctive looking herbivore with a stunning prismatic pelt that, especially in full sunlight, displays a resplendent radiance! This squirrel loves to munch on flavorsome fruits and the juicy guavas will definitely make for some scrumptious, tasty treats!

This pattern includes the Malabar giant squirrel and the (whole and half) guava fruits**.**

The 16 cm squirrel (+ a 13 cm tail) and was made on 2 mm dpn (UK 14, US 0), the 2.5 cm guavas were done in miniature on 1.25 mm dpn, all in single plies of Schachenmayr Merino Extrafine (150). Adding a strand of mohair gives the squirrel a fluffy look. Here, Drops Brushed Alpaca Silk was added to the base yarn. All items can be made on thicker needles, in heavier yarn, and will turn out larger. This easy, fast project is knitted flat with some intarsia color work and short rows and ideal for using up any scraps you have lying around.

Malabar Giant Squirrel & Guavas Knitted Toys

What Is Being Made

This downloadable knitting pattern from AnimalKnitdom features two complementary toy projects: a Malabar giant squirrel and guava fruits. The Malabar or Indian giant squirrel (Ratufa indica) is one of the world's largest squirrel species, native to the tropical rainforests of India. These remarkable creatures can measure 25–50 cm in body length with an equally impressive tail, and weigh up to 2 kg. The pattern captures the squirrel's most distinctive features: large furry ear tufts and robust forelimbs that define its appearance. The accompanying guava fruits complement the squirrel design, reflecting the animal's herbivorous diet and preference for munching on flavorful fruits found in the forest canopy.

Design Inspiration & Natural History

The Malabar giant squirrel is a congenial yet coy animal that inhabits the upper canopy of tropical rainforests, leaping and lunging from tree to tree in search of food and rarely descending to the ground. The pattern celebrates the squirrel's remarkable coloration: in the shaded habitat beneath the forest roof, its muted colors and patchy hues provide excellent camouflage. However, when exposed to sunlight, its prismatic pelage displays resplendent radiance and reveals its true colors. This interplay of color and light makes the Malabar giant squirrel an ideal subject for a knitted toy project.

Knitting Techniques & Stitches

This beginner-friendly knitting pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for crafters new to the craft. The pattern utilizes standard knitting stitches to construct three-dimensional toy forms. Techniques typically include increasing and decreasing stitches to shape the squirrel's body, head, and distinctive ear tufts, as well as the rounded forms of the guava fruits. The construction method allows for the creation of stuffed, sculptural pieces that capture the character and charm of these forest creatures.

Materials & Yarn

The pattern calls for varied yarn weights, allowing flexibility in material selection and finished toy size. Knitters will need appropriate knitting needles matched to their chosen yarn weight. The varied yarn weight specification enables crafters to customize their projects based on available materials and desired dimensions, making this pattern adaptable to different yarn stashes and preferences.
