Brimmed hat with knitted magnolia flower, picot edging, and soft folds. Brim shape is created through geometry and tight gauge - no cardboard or plastic! Hat can be trimmed with buttons instead of a flower if desired. Hat can be made longer than cap length pictured, but you will need more yarn. The brim's structural integrity comes from the recommended cast on, the tight gauge, shaping, and leaving the wraps in place unless otherwise specified. Brim photo tutorial available - email me after pattern purchase. Worsted weight, approx. 190yds, If you want a longer hat, not the cap as pictured, you’ll need more yarn. The pictured cap used the entire skein of Brown Sheep worsted. For the flower, you’ll need small amounts of two contrasting colors.
Magnolia Hat by Cheryl Andrews
What Is Being Made
The Magnolia Hat is a brimmed knit hat featuring a decorative knitted magnolia flower as its focal point. This intermediate-level knitting project creates an adult medium-sized cap with soft folds and a structured brim. The design offers versatility, allowing crafters to substitute buttons for the magnolia flower if preferred. The hat showcases a blend of functional construction and decorative embellishment, making it suitable for both everyday wear and special occasions.
Knitting Techniques
This pattern employs several key knitting techniques to achieve its distinctive shape and structure. The brim is created through geometric shaping and tight gauge, eliminating the need for cardboard or plastic stiffening materials. The hat is knitted in the round, a fundamental technique for seamless circular garments. The design incorporates picot edging, a decorative technique that creates small loops along the edge for a refined finish. The knitted magnolia flower serves as both a decorative and structural element, adding dimensional interest to the completed hat.
Stitches and Construction
The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches appropriate for worsted weight yarn and intermediate skill levels. Construction involves working in the round using circular needles, which allows for continuous knitting without seams. The picot edging technique creates decorative points along the hat's edges. The magnolia flower is a separate knitted component that is attached to the finished hat, requiring knowledge of flower construction and finishing techniques.
Materials Required
- Yarn: Approximately 190 yards of worsted weight yarn for the main hat body. The pattern sample was created using Brown Sheep Lamb's Pride worsted (85% wool, 15% mohair blend, 4oz/113g per skein). Additional small amounts of two contrasting worsted weight colors are needed for the knitted magnolia flower.
- Needles: Two size 6 circular needles measuring 16 inches, one set of size 6 double-pointed needles (set of 5), and one stitch marker for tracking rounds.
- Gauge: 19 stitches and 26 rows equal 4 inches when knitting in the round with worsted weight yarn on size 6 needles.
- Size: Adult medium
Design Notes
Crafters who prefer a longer hat rather than the pictured cap style will require additional yarn beyond the standard 190-yard estimate. The pattern's use of tight gauge to create brim structure demonstrates advanced construction knowledge, allowing the hat to maintain its shape without internal support materials. The optional button substitution for the magnolia flower provides customization flexibility for different aesthetic preferences.
