Product Description
The main tea cosy is knitted using two strands on DK held together on 4.5mm needles. All other pieces are single strand DK I used Boucle yarn for her hair but DK could be used instead. I used a buckle embellishment but there are also knitted instructions included.
Maggie the Nurse Tea Cosy
What Is Being Made
Maggie the Nurse Tea Cosy is a decorative knitted tea cosy designed by Alison Davis, sized to fit a 6-cup GS teapot. This charming piece combines functional insulation with whimsical character detailing, featuring a nurse-themed design that makes it both a practical kitchen accessory and a decorative conversation piece.
Craft and Techniques
This project is created using the knitting craft at an intermediate difficulty level. The tea cosy employs a multi-strand construction technique where the main body is knitted using two strands of DK yarn worked together simultaneously on 4.5mm needles to achieve the required density and structure. This double-strand approach creates a thicker, more insulating fabric suitable for protecting hands from hot teapots. Additional components, including the hair detail and fob watch accent, are worked with single strands of DK on progressively smaller needles to create finer, more detailed elements. A crochet hook is used to attach the hair component, adding a mixed-technique element to the construction.
Stitches Used
- Garter Stitch (GS): Knit every row, used as the primary stitch throughout the main cosy body, creating a textured, reversible fabric
- Knit (K): The fundamental knit stitch forming the basis of the fabric
- Knit Two Together (K2tog): A decrease technique used to shape the cosy and create shaping details
- Knit Front and Back (KFB) and Knit Front Back Front Back (KFBFB): Increase techniques used to expand stitches, particularly for sleeve construction and shaping
- Make One (M1): A stitch increase method used to add stitches by picking up the horizontal strand between stitches
- Bind and Tie (B&T): A finishing technique where yarn is threaded through remaining stitches, pulled tight, and tied off, leaving a tail for sewing up seams
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This pattern uses DK (double knit) weight yarn, which is a medium-weight yarn ideal for creating defined stitch definition and appropriate fabric density. The yarn is worked in two different ways throughout the project: double stranded for the main cosy body and single stranded for detailed components.
Needles and Tools
- Pair of 4.5mm needles for the main tea cosy body
- Pair of 4mm needles for hair detail
- Pair of 3mm needles for general smaller components
- Pair of 2.75mm needles for the fob watch accent piece
- Crochet hook for attaching the hair component
Tension Requirements
Achieving proper tension is essential for this pattern's success. For the main cosy body: using two strands of DK on 4.5mm needles, the tension should measure 15 stitches and 24 rows over a 10cm square worked in stockinette stitch. For all other pieces: using a single strand of DK on 3mm needles, the tension should measure 25 stitches and 34 rows over a 10cm square in stockinette stitch. These varying tension requirements reflect the different yarn configurations and needle sizes used for different components of the design.
