Luftslott Cropped Cardigan by Yarn-Madness

What is Being Made

Luftslott is an elegant, cropped cardigan designed as a seamless, top-down knit. The name "Luftslott" means "reverie" in Swedish, reflecting the light and airy aesthetic of this garment. This flattering cardigan features a tied closure and is intended to be a versatile wardrobe piece that can be knitted in multiple colorways due to its efficient yardage requirements.

Design and Construction

The garment is constructed using a top-down seamless knitting method, which allows for easy fitting adjustments and eliminates the need for seaming. The cardigan includes beautiful garter stitch details and edgings that provide textural contrast and visual interest to the finished piece.

Sizing Options

Luftslott is available in eight sizes ranging from extra small to 4X-large:

  • XS: 28 inches (70 cm) bust width
  • S: 32 inches (80 cm) bust width
  • M: 36 inches (90 cm) bust width
  • L: 40 inches (100 cm) bust width
  • XL: 44 inches (110 cm) bust width
  • 2X: 48 inches (120 cm) bust width
  • 3X: 52 inches (130 cm) bust width
  • 4X: 56 inches (140 cm) bust width

Knitting Techniques

This intermediate-level project employs several key knitting techniques. The top-down seamless construction method allows knitters to work from the neckline downward, creating a garment without seams. The pattern incorporates garter stitch, which is created by knitting every row and produces a textured, reversible fabric ideal for edgings and decorative details. Yarn overs are used as an increase technique, particularly in the 3in1 stitch variation that increases two stitches from a single stitch.

Stitches and Abbreviations

The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations and the following stitches:

  • Stockinette stitch: The primary fabric, created by alternating knit and purl rows
  • Garter stitch: Used for decorative details and edgings throughout the cardigan
  • Yarn overs (Yo): Creates decorative increases and lace-like details
  • 3in1 stitch: A specialized increase that creates two stitches from one by knitting, yarning over, and knitting again into the same stitch

Additional abbreviations include: K (knit), P (purl), Sts (stitches), CO (cast on), BO (bind off), Pm (place marker), and Sm (slip marker).

Yarn and Materials

Luftslott is designed to be knitted with heavy fingering or DK weight yarn, making it an accessible project for intermediate knitters. The yardage requirements vary by size and are notably efficient:

  • XS/S/M/L sizes: Approximately 300, 330, 360, and 380 yards (275, 300, 330, and 350 meters) respectively
  • XL/2X/3X/4X sizes: Approximately 410, 450, 530, and 610 yards (375, 410, 480, and 560 meters) respectively

The modest yardage requirements make this an ideal project for using yarn from stash or for creating multiple versions in different colorways.

Needles and Tools

This pattern requires 5 mm (US 8) knitting needles in the primary size. Knitters will also need the same size double-pointed needles, or alternatively may use the magic loop method if preferred for knitting sleeves. The flexibility in needle choice accommodates different knitting preferences and techniques.

Gauge

The pattern is worked at a gauge of 4.5 stitches and 6 rows per inch in stockinette stitch. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining the intended finished measurements and fit of the cardigan.
