Luau Double Knit Cowl by Tania Richter
What Is Being Made
The Luau Cowl is a knitted neck cowl designed by Tania Richter, featuring a double-knit construction that creates a reversible, two-sided fabric with contrasting colors. This finished cowl measures 22 inches (56 cm) in circumference and 6 inches (15 cm) in height, making it a versatile accessory suitable for layering and wearing in multiple ways.
Knitting Techniques Used
Double-knitting is the primary technique employed in this design. Double-knitting is an advanced knitting method that produces a reversible fabric with two distinct sides, each displaying a different color pattern. This technique involves working with two yarn colors simultaneously on a single needle, creating interlocking stitches that form a thick, durable fabric. Each square on the pattern chart represents two stitches—a knit stitch followed by a purl stitch—worked in alternating colors to build the design. The structured approach of always knitting a knit stitch before a purl stitch (never reversing this order) ensures proper fabric formation and prevents twisted stitches.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette stitch forms the base gauge measurement and overall fabric structure
- Knit stitches and purl stitches worked in combination as part of the double-knit technique
- Cast-on stitches (80 stitch pairs, totaling 160 stitches) establish the foundation
Materials Required
Yarn: Approximately 200 yards total—100 yards of a main color and 100 yards of a contrasting color. The pattern recommends HiKoo by skacel's Simpliworsted or an equivalent aran weight yarn, which provides the appropriate thickness and stitch definition needed for double-knit work.
Needles and Notions: A 16-inch US size 5 (3.75 mm) circular needle is required for working this cowl in the round. Additional materials include a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and stitch markers to help track pattern repeats and construction progress.
Gauge and Construction Details
The pattern is worked to a gauge of 16 stitches and 24 rows over 10 centimeters (4 inches) in stockinette stitch. The cowl is constructed by casting on 80 stitch pairs and working through a 32-row chart that defines the double-knit color pattern. The circular needle allows for seamless, in-the-round knitting, which eliminates the need for seaming and creates a smooth, continuous fabric.
