A clear and colour coded description of how to crochet and assemble the animal. Pictures and illustrations to help getting everything right.
Materials: For this lion you need worsted weight yarn and an E US/3.5 mm crochet hook. You need three colours of yarn, camel (1/3 of 100 yard skein), brown (1/3) and white (1/10). For the eyes I’ve used 8 mm animal eyes, and I needle felted a nose (a bit wider than the eyes), but any other kind works too. You will also need fibrefill, pellets for a bit of extra weight in the body (I use Hama beads) and a pipe cleaner for the tail is optional. Lopi colour numbers: 1400, 0053 and 0051.
Lopi the Lion Crochet Pattern
What Is Being Made
Lopi the Lion is a small crocheted amigurumi-style toy lion designed by Sonja van der Wijk. When made with the recommended yarn specifications, the finished lion measures approximately 6 inches (15 cm) in sitting height, making it an ideal small stuffed toy or decorative piece. This is a downloadable PDF pattern suitable for crafters seeking to create a charming, textured animal companion.
Craft and Construction Method
This pattern uses the crochet technique exclusively, worked primarily in the round using continuous spiral rounds. The designer recommends using a stitch marker to clearly mark the beginning of each round, moving it upward as new rounds commence. This method creates a seamless, three-dimensional form ideal for toy construction. The pattern is written in standard American crochet terminology, making it accessible to English-speaking crocheters.
Stitches and Techniques Used
While the complete stitch list is not fully detailed in the provided content, the pattern employs fundamental crochet stitches worked in continuous rounds to build the lion's body and features. The pattern includes color changes throughout construction, with some changes color-coded in the written instructions for clarity. The designer emphasizes changing color in the final loop of a stitch, ensuring the new color appears on the hook as you begin the next stitch. This technique creates clean color transitions essential for defining the lion's facial features and body sections.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The pattern calls for worsted weight yarn. The designer strongly recommends using a fuzzy yarn to achieve the lion's characteristic texture and appearance. The specific yarn used in the original design is Istex Lètt lopi, a 100% wool fiber known for its softness and loft. Worsted weight yarn provides the appropriate thickness for creating a toy of the intended 6-inch finished size, though the final dimensions will vary based on individual yarn choice and personal crochet tension.
Difficulty Level and Considerations
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, indicating it is suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle slightly more complex projects. The pattern recommends experimenting with eye size despite provided recommendations, as the overall doll dimensions depend significantly on the yarn weight selected and individual crochet tension. This flexibility allows crafters to customize their lion while maintaining the designer's intended aesthetic.
