Loomed Square Bear by Linda Morris Tomlin

What is Being Made

The Loomed Square Bear is a beginner-friendly toy project designed by Linda Morris Tomlin through Linnypin Designs UK. This stuffed bear is constructed using a modular approach, with individual loomed squares that are sewn together to form the complete three-dimensional toy. The finished bear features safety eyes and is suitable for crafters new to loom knitting techniques.

Loom Knitting Technique

This project utilizes knitting loom as the primary construction method. Rather than traditional hand knitting with needles, the loom allows crafters to create flat squares that serve as building blocks for the toy. Each square is loomed individually, making this an excellent introduction to loom knitting for beginners. The modular square-based construction means no complex shaping or decreasing is required during the looming process itself.

Stitches and Gauge

The pattern works to a gauge of 13 stitches and 13 rows to a 6cm square over the loomed stitch. This consistent gauge ensures that all squares created will be uniform in size, which is essential for proper assembly. The loomed stitch creates a distinctive textured fabric suitable for a soft toy application.

Assembly and Construction

The bear is assembled by sewing the loomed squares together using a firm back stitch worked on the right sides. When creating each square on the loom, crafters should leave approximately 25cm of yarn at each end—these extended lengths serve as the sewing yarn for joining squares together. All squares are positioned facing the same direction where possible to maintain visual consistency across the finished bear.

  • Yarn: DK weight yarn in appropriate colors for the bear
  • Knitting loom: Appropriate size for creating 6cm squares
  • Safety eyes: For facial features
  • Sewing needle and thread: For assembling the squares and attaching safety eyes

Difficulty Level and Support
