Product Description
Pippi Longstocking isn’t just the world’s strongest girl, she’s also an amazing role model and fun friend. Generations of kids have grown up with the stories and films about Pippi. In the 1970’s film Pippi wears a knitted sweater from Gotland, where the filming happened. The pattern became iconic and the sweater often referred to as Pippi-sweater and spread to all types of garments.
Using different basic stitches to shape the stripes it is easy enough for beginners and the stripes makes it a fun pattern to make without getting boring.
The pattern is available in UK and US terminologies as well as in Swedish. The pattern is written for one size with the numbers given for 4 different sizes in 3 different yarn weights for endless adaptation (size tables on last 2 pages)

Longstocking Blanket by Craftling Designs
Project Overview
The Longstocking blanket is a beginner-friendly crochet throw designed by Craftling Designs UK. This colorful blanket combines a main champagne white base with contrasting dolphin blue and rose red stripes, creating a modern striped aesthetic. The finished blanket measures 100x130cm, making it an ideal size for a cozy throw or lap blanket, with alternative size options available in the pattern.
What Is Being Made
This is a striped crochet blanket featuring a multi-color design. The blanket uses a primary champagne white color as the main field, accented with coordinating stripes in dolphin blue and rose red. The construction creates a finished rectangular throw that works well as both a decorative accent piece and a functional blanket for warmth.
Crochet Techniques Used
The Longstocking blanket employs the chainless foundation technique as its primary construction method. This advanced foundation approach eliminates the traditional separate chain foundation row by creating the foundation chain and first row of stitches simultaneously. The chainless foundation method produces a stretchy, professional-looking edge while making it easier to count and identify individual stitches—a particular advantage for beginners learning to maintain consistent stitch counts.
Crochet Stitches Used
- Chain stitch (ch): Used for the chainless foundation and any necessary turning chains throughout the pattern
- Double crochet (dc): A fundamental stitch that creates a dense, structured fabric suitable for blankets
- Treble crochet (tr): A taller stitch that adds texture and variation to the blanket's surface
- Foundation treble crochet (FDNtr): The specialized stitch used in the chainless foundation technique to simultaneously create the base chain and first working row
Yarn and Materials
Yarn: Paintbox Yarns Wool mix aran weight, a blend of 50% wool and 50% acrylic. This fiber composition provides warmth and durability while remaining easy to care for. The yarn is worked at 180 meters (197 yards) per 100g ball.
Yarn quantities: The main champagne white color (shade 802) requires 1840 meters or 2012 yards, equivalent to 9.5 balls. Each contrast color—dolphin blue (shade 836) and rose red (shade 813)—requires 290 meters or 318 yards, equivalent to 1.6 balls per color.
Hook size: A 5.0mm (size H) crochet hook is used throughout the project.
Tension: The pattern is worked at a tension of 15 stitches over 10 centimeters, which should be checked before beginning to ensure the finished blanket meets the intended dimensions.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as beginner-friendly, making it accessible to crocheters new to the craft. While the chainless foundation technique is more advanced than traditional chain foundations, the pattern's use of basic stitches and straightforward construction makes it an excellent project for building skills and confidence.
