Long and Short Sleeved Cardigans in Sirdar Snuggly DK – Pattern 4446
Pattern 4446 from Sirdar is a charming knitting pattern offering two classic baby and children's cardigan designs: a long sleeved cardigan and a short sleeved cardigan. Both versions are worked in Sirdar Snuggly DK yarn and sized to fit children from 6 months through to 7 years, making this a wonderfully versatile pattern to return to as little ones grow. The designs are clean, timeless, and well-suited to both everyday wear and special occasions.
Sizes and Fit
The pattern covers five sizes based on age and chest measurement:
- 6–12 months – to fit 46 cm (18 in) chest, actual measurement 49 cm (19¼ in)
- 1–2 years – to fit 51 cm (20 in) chest, actual measurement 55 cm (21¾ in)

The Long Sleeved Cardigan
The long sleeved version is a classic, cosy cardigan ideal for cooler months or layering over babygrows and tops. It is worked in Sirdar Snuggly DK shade 187 and requires between 2 and 4 balls of 50 g yarn depending on the size being made. Sleeve lengths are fully adjustable and range from 17 cm (6½ in) for the 6–12 month size up to 33 cm (13 in) for the 6–7 year size, with guidance provided for adjusting length to suit individual children.
Design Details – Long Sleeved Version
- Structured, fitted silhouette with set-in or shaped sleeves
- Neat ribbed welts at the lower edges and cuffs worked on smaller needles for a tidy, professional finish
- A decorative lace or eyelet panel is incorporated into the design, featuring yarn forward stitches (yfwd), slip-stitch decreases (s1, k2tog, psso), and a repeating pattern that adds a delicate, feminine texture
- Fastened with a single button
The Short Sleeved Cardigan
The short sleeved version offers a lighter, more summery alternative — perfect for warmer weather or as a stylish layer over dresses and rompers. It is worked in Sirdar Snuggly DK shade 188 and requires between 2 and 3 balls of 50 g yarn across all sizes. The short sleeve length is a consistent 4 cm (1½ in) across all sizes, giving a neat cap-sleeve effect.
Design Details – Short Sleeved Version
- The same classic cardigan structure as the long sleeved version, maintaining a consistent, well-proportioned silhouette
- Ribbed welts and neat finishing details carried through from the long sleeved design
- The same lace eyelet stitch pattern is featured, adding visual interest and a handcrafted quality to what might otherwise be a simple summer layer
- Fastened with a single button
