I have revamped this design and I am now offering it as an (always) FREE PATTERN.
The layout and content is indicative of my other designs, the main, significant difference being that my other designs have more images.
Knitted from tip to tip, this design uses a variable stitch count pattern. Starting with 4 sts it increases in size as you knit so if you choose to use this design for a scrappy shawl or wish to substitute for a stashed yarn you have plenty of, you can just keep increasing until you are ready to bind/cast off. It features a simple icord bind off.
Quite an intuitive knit once you get going, it is also fairly economical to make. Experienced knitters will find they hardly need to refer to the pattern once they have knitted a few pattern repeats. It would make a lovely gift knit and it would also make perfect travel knitting.

Project Overview
The Lolly Cake Shawl is a complimentary knitted shawl design inspired by the iconic New Zealand sweet treat of the same name. The stitch pattern and colorway of the original design sample drew inspiration from the appearance of the traditional Lolly Cake dessert, resulting in a whimsical and playful knitting project suitable for intermediate-level knitters.
What You Will Create
This is a triangular shawl design available in two size options, each worked from the top down. The shawl features a cast-off edge and expands to create a generous garment suitable for wrapping and layering.
Shawl Dimensions
The Lolly Cake Shawl is offered in two versions with different finished measurements:
- King Cole Version (DK weight): Approximately 200cm from tip to tip along the longest edge, 150cm along the second longest edge, 80cm cast-off edge, and 46cm at the widest point
- Caron Cake Version (worsted weight): Approximately 165cm from tip to tip along the longest edge, 125cm along the second longest edge, 83cm cast-off edge, and 40cm at the widest point
Knitting Techniques
This intermediate-level shawl employs stitch patterns that create visual interest reminiscent of the colorful, layered appearance of Lolly Cake. The design demonstrates fundamental shawl construction techniques suitable for knitters with some experience beyond basic stockinette stitch.
Yarn and Materials
The Lolly Cake Shawl can be worked in multiple yarn weights to suit different preferences and needle sizes:
- DK Weight Option: King Cole Riot yarn (100gm balls; 2 balls required for the smaller version)
- Worsted and Aran Weight Options: Compatible with Caron Cake and similar yarn weights in these categories
Needle sizes will vary depending on the yarn weight selected, with finer needles used for DK weight and larger needles for worsted and aran weights to achieve proper gauge and fabric drape.
