Product Description

I made this design for the fun of having a Mermaid reading companion to read along with me. It works up really fast and makes a quick and darling gift for friends, family or you.

The crochet stitches include, sc, hdc, dc, tr and sl st. The pattern includes description of abbreviations and complete instructions.

It uses small amounts of crochet thread and any colors can be used so it is a great project to use up small amounts of crochet thread (25 yards being the most that is needed).

Other materials Needed:Small amount red (or choice of mouth color) could also use embroidery floss 1 skeins reddish-brown (or choice of hair color) embroidery floss Small amount of polyester fiberfill Optional (6mm pearlized beads, small shells) Tapestry needle

Project Overview

This downloadable crochet pattern from LoisLeigh Anderson creates a charming mermaid-themed bookmark perfect for any reader. The design combines colorful thread work with optional embellishments to craft a delightful literary companion. This intermediate-level crochet project uses fine bedspread weight cotton thread to achieve detailed, dimensional features including the mermaid's face, hair, tail, and decorative elements.

Crochet Stitches and Techniques

The Mermaid Bookmark pattern employs a variety of fundamental and intermediate crochet stitches to build structure and detail. Crafters will work with single crochet (sc), half double crochet (hdc), double crochet (dc), treble crochet (tr), and slip stitch (sl st) throughout the project. These stitch combinations allow for both solid fabric construction and decorative shaping. The pattern includes complete abbreviation descriptions and step-by-step instructions suitable for intermediate-level crocheters seeking to expand their stitch repertoire.

Materials and Tools

This project utilizes fine bedspread weight cotton thread in size 10, offering excellent stitch definition and durability for a bookmark that will withstand frequent handling. The color palette includes:

  • Pink thread (10 yards) for skin tone, with substitution options available
  • Turquoise thread (15 yards) for the tail, eyes, and top portions
  • Cream thread (3 yards) for clam or shell details
  • Dark dusty rose thread (2 yards) for interior oyster coloring
  • Red thread (small amount) for the mouth, with embroidery floss as an alternative
  • Reddish-brown embroidery floss (1 skein) for hair details
  • Polyester fiberfill for stuffing dimensional elements

Essential tools include a Boye Steel Crochet hook size 1 (2.25mm) for working with the fine thread, a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and adding embroidery details, and washable fabric glue for securing embellishments. Optional decorative additions include 6mm pearlized beads, small shells, and beading wire to enhance the mermaid's oceanic theme.

Gauge and Construction

The pattern specifies a gauge of 8 half double crochet stitches equaling 1 inch (2.5cm) horizontally, with 5 hdc rows equaling 1 inch (2.5cm) vertically. Maintaining this gauge is essential for achieving the proper bookmark dimensions and ensuring all components fit together correctly.

Difficulty Level

Designed as an intermediate level project, this bookmark pattern suits crocheters with foundational stitch knowledge who are ready to work with multiple colors, manage fine thread, and incorporate shaping techniques. The combination of various stitch types and the detailed construction of facial features and embellishments provides an engaging challenge without requiring advanced techniques.
