Lines Cardigan by Georgia Farrell in Rowan Kidsilk Haze & Felted Tweed

The Lines Cardigan is an intermediate-level knitted cardigan designed by Georgia Farrell and published by Rowan. This elegant, relaxed-fit garment is worked in a striking colourwork construction that combines two very different Rowan yarns — the gossamer-weight Kidsilk Haze and the rustic, textured Felted Tweed — held and used separately across multiple colours to create a rich, painterly palette of greens and neutrals. The pattern is available as a downloadable PDF and is suitable for knitters who are comfortable with colourwork and shaping techniques.

What Is Being Made

The Lines Cardigan is a full-sized women's cardigan offered in a generous range of nine sizes, fitting bust measurements from 71–76 cm (28–30 in) up to 152–157 cm (60–62 in). The actual bust measurement of the finished garment ranges from 110 cm (43¼ in) to 192 cm (75½ in), indicating a deliberately relaxed, oversized silhouette with significant positive ease. This makes it a versatile layering piece suited to a wide range of body types.

Design & Colourwork

The defining feature of the Lines Cardigan is its multi-colour construction, which uses the intarsia technique to create distinct blocks or sections of colour rather than carrying yarn across the full width of the fabric. Intarsia is a method where separate small balls or bobbins of yarn are used for each colour section, with the yarns twisted together at colour joins to avoid holes. This approach is well suited to bold, graphic designs and is what gives the cardigan its characteristic "lines" aesthetic.

The colourwork is charted, meaning knitters follow a stitch-by-stitch chart for the back and other pieces, beginning and ending rows as indicated for each size. This chart-based approach allows the colour pattern to be precisely placed across all sizes while maintaining the integrity of the design.

Techniques Used

  • Intarsia colourwork — working separate yarn sections for each colour block, with yarns twisted at joins
  • Chart reading — following a stitch chart with size-specific start and end points
  • Garment shaping — including side seam increases worked at specific row intervals that vary by size (for example, increases on the 25th, 27th, or 33rd row depending on size, then repeated on subsequent rows)
  • Seaming and construction — standard cardigan construction with separate back and front pieces

Stitches Used

  • Stocking stitch (stockinette) — the primary fabric stitch used throughout the body, providing a smooth surface that showcases the intarsia colour sections clearly
  • Increase stitches — worked at each end of specified rows to shape the body, with increases integrated into the colour pattern

Yarn & Materials

The Lines Cardigan uses two Rowan yarns across six colours, combining a lace-weight and a DK-weight yarn for a nuanced textural and tonal effect:

  • Rowan Kidsilk Haze (25 g balls) — a luxurious lace-weight yarn with a halo finish, used in three colourways:
    • Colour A: Peacock 671 — 4 to 8 balls depending on size
    • Colour C: Gem 692 — 1 ball across all sizes
    • Colour E: Steel 664 — 1 ball across all sizes
  • Rowan Felted Tweed (50 g balls) — a DK-weight yarn with a distinctive tweedy, slightly felted texture, used in three colourways:
    • Colour B:
