Product Description
Lily is named after my mother; she died in 2007 so this blanket was made as a tribute to her. Although she was a seamstress she also knitted and crocheted. She loved colour, so I used as many bright colours as I could find. I’m sure she would have loved the blanket. Lily is a scrap blanket and best made with oddments from your stash in as many different colours as possible. If you would like to buy yarn especially for Lily then a recommended yarn is shown below. The pattern is written in US and UK terms.
LILY Crochet Blanket by Amanda Perkins
Project Overview
LILY is an intermediate-level crochet blanket designed as a colorful scrap project, created by Amanda Perkins as a tribute to her mother. This downloadable PDF pattern produces a finished blanket measuring approximately 40 x 55 inches, composed of 232 individual motifs arranged in 15 rows of alternating lengths (15 and 16 motifs per row). The design celebrates vibrant color work, making it an ideal project for crafters with stashes of leftover yarn in multiple hues.
Yarn Requirements and Material Specifications
LILY is designed as a scrap blanket project, requiring a total of 1400 grams of 4-ply weight yarn. The pattern is best executed using oddments and leftover yarns from your existing stash in as many different colors as possible, allowing for creative color combinations and sustainable yarn use.
For crafters purchasing yarn specifically for this project, Amanda Perkins recommends the following 4-ply yarn brands and colorways:
- Easyknits: Splendour, Cherish
- Skein Queen: Selkino, Lustrous, Luminosity, Oasis Grande
- John Arbon Textiles: Exmoor Sock, Harvest Hues
- The Little Grey Sheep: Stein 4 ply, Gotland 4 Ply
- Fyberspates: Vivacious 4 ply, Scrumptious 4 ply
- Cascade: Heritage Silk, Cascade 220 Fingering
- Drops: Alpaca
- Knitpicks: Palette Yarn
- King Cole: Merino Blend 4ply
Crochet Techniques and Construction
The LILY blanket is constructed using a motif-based approach, a popular crochet technique where individual square or geometric units are created separately and then joined together to form the complete blanket. This method offers several advantages: it allows for flexible color changes between motifs, makes the project portable and easy to work on in sections, and enables crafters to use up yarn scraps efficiently.
The motif construction method is particularly well-suited to intermediate-level crocheters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to tackle projects requiring stitch consistency, color management, and assembly techniques. The alternating row structure (15 and 16 motifs per row) creates the rectangular 40 x 55-inch finished dimensions.
Design Inspiration and Color Approach
The LILY blanket celebrates color diversity and brightness throughout its design. Amanda Perkins chose to incorporate as many bright colors as possible in tribute to her mother's love of vibrant hues. This approach makes LILY an excellent choice for crafters who enjoy working with multiple yarn colors and want to create a visually dynamic, rainbow-inspired finished piece.
Skill Level and Suitability
Classified as an intermediate difficulty project, LILY is appropriate for crocheters with foundational skills who are comfortable working with multiple colors, maintaining consistent tension across motifs, and assembling larger projects. The motif-based construction provides natural breaking points, making it manageable for crafters working on projects over extended periods.
