Product Description
This is a lovely and an almost circle shape shawl with post stitches and cables for making flowers. The pattern is partially charted. Make it with two or more colors or with only one: it is your choice, the flowers are crocheted with post-stitches so they should be visible with only one color too!
The pattern does not include a help how to change colors!
I have crocheted it from worsted weight yarn, but you may choose any weight of yarn that you like! I suggest using a bigger hook than recommended. The gauge is not important!
Lili Mary Shawl by Zsuzsanna Makai
What is Being Made
The Lili Mary Shawl is an advanced crochet design that creates an almost circular shawl featuring decorative floral elements. This downloadable PDF pattern, designed by Zsuzsanna Makai and copyrighted in 2014, offers crafters the flexibility to work with either a single color or multiple colors while maintaining visible floral details throughout the finished piece.
Crochet Techniques Used
This pattern employs several intermediate to advanced crochet techniques to achieve its distinctive aesthetic. The primary decorative elements are created using post stitches, which are worked around the posts of previous stitches rather than into the tops of stitches. These post stitches form the foundation for the shawl's floral motifs. Additionally, cable stitches are incorporated into the design to enhance the dimensional quality of the flowers. The combination of these techniques creates raised, textured elements that remain visible and striking regardless of whether the crocheter chooses to work in a single color or incorporate contrasting hues.
Stitches and Pattern Structure
The pattern utilizes fundamental crochet stitches including chain stitches (ch) and standard stitches (st). The design is partially charted, meaning some sections of the pattern are presented in visual chart format while other sections may be written in text instructions. This mixed format approach accommodates various learning styles and provides clarity for the more complex floral sections of the design.
Materials and Specifications
The Lili Mary Shawl can be crafted with any type of yarn, though the designer's sample was created using worsted weight yarn. The sample shawl required approximately 10.56 ounces or 816 yards (300g or 746.4 meters) of the main color yarn and 8.1 ounces or 625.6 yards (230g or 572.2 meters) of contrast color yarn. The original sample yarn measured 136 yards per 1.76 ounces (124 meters per 50 grams).
A 6mm crochet hook was used for the sample, which is sized slightly larger than typically suggested for worsted weight yarn. This sizing choice contributes to the shawl's drape and finished appearance. Notably, gauge is not critical for this pattern, making it more forgiving for crocheters of varying experience levels and allowing for personal customization of the finished size.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is classified as advanced, reflecting the complexity of the post stitch and cable techniques required to create the dimensional floral elements. Crocheters should have solid foundational skills and comfort with working stitches in non-standard positions before undertaking this project.
