Like a Lamb Wrap by Melynda Bernardi
What is Being Made
Like a Lamb is a sophisticated knitted wrap designed as a transitional piece that bridges seasons from winter into spring. This versatile accessory functions as both a day and evening garment, suitable for layering across all climates. The wrap exemplifies timeless wardrobe design through its elegant simplicity and refined construction.
Yarn and Materials
This pattern calls for lace weight cashmere, a luxurious fiber choice that creates an exceptionally delicate and refined fabric. The lace weight classification indicates a very fine yarn suitable for intricate stitch work and airy, drape-forward garments. Cashmere provides natural warmth while maintaining the ethereal quality essential to lace knitting.
Techniques Used
The Like a Lamb wrap employs several fundamental knitting techniques that work in concert to create its distinctive aesthetic. The pattern begins with a knitted cast on, which creates a neat, flexible edge ideal for lace garments. The construction utilizes yarn overs and decreases to form the openwork lace sections that characterize the design. The wrap features structured eyelet edging along both sides, creating a refined frame for the central lace panels.
Stitches Used
- Knit stitch (k): Worked on right side rows and wrong side purls, forming the foundational fabric structure
- Purl stitch (p): Worked on right side rows as knit on wrong side rows, creating textural variation
- Yarn over (yo): Creates the decorative eyelets and openwork lace patterns throughout the wrap
- Knit two together (k2tog): A right-leaning decrease that pairs with yarn overs to form the lace motifs
Pattern Structure
The Like a Lamb wrap is constructed with a total of 82 cast-on stitches arranged in a thoughtfully balanced layout. The pattern features a 5-stitch eyelet edging on each side that frames the central design. Between these edge stitches sit two 20-stitch lace panels separated by a 32-stitch knit panel in the middle, creating a symmetrical composition. The right side rows establish the lace pattern with yarn overs and decreases, while wrong side rows are worked in stockinette stitch to allow the lace to display prominently on the public-facing side.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as advanced, reflecting the technical skill required to execute lace knitting successfully. Knitters working this design should be comfortable reading lace charts, managing yarn overs and decreases in sequence, and maintaining consistent tension throughout the delicate lace weight yarn. The combination of multiple stitch patterns and the precision required for lace work makes this suitable for experienced knitters seeking a refined challenge.
