Product Description
Lattice Scarf by Martin Storey in Rowan Alpaca Soft DK – Pattern Summary (French Edition)
The Lattice Scarf is a beautifully structured, tube-knitted scarf designed by Martin Storey and published by Rowan in 2020. This downloadable PDF pattern is written in French and is rated intermediate in difficulty. The finished scarf measures an impressive 21.5 cm wide and approximately 208 cm long, making it a generous, luxurious accessory suitable for cooler seasons. The design is worked entirely in the round, producing a seamless double-layered tube that gives the scarf a polished, reversible finish.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a single elongated scarf worked as a tube in the round. The construction begins and ends with sections of two-colour ribbing, which frame the central body of the scarf. The main body features an intricate lattice-style colourwork motif worked in stranded colourwork (Fair Isle technique), giving the scarf its name and its distinctive woven, geometric appearance. The tube construction means both the ribbed cuffs and the colourwork body are knitted in the round throughout, with no seaming required.
Techniques Used
- Knitting in the round – the entire scarf is worked in the round using either a set of double-pointed needles or a short circular needle, producing a seamless tube
- Two-colour ribbing (côtes bicolores) – alternating knit stitches in Colour A and purl stitches in Colour B to create a stretchy, visually striking ribbed border at each end
- Stranded colourwork / Fair Isle technique – the central lattice body is worked in jacquard de jersey endroit (stranded stocking stitch in the round), carrying the unused yarn across the wrong side of the fabric as floats
- Chart reading – two separate charts are provided: Chart A (rows 1–98, then rows 81–98 repeated a further 19 times) and Chart B (rows 1–81), both based on an 18-stitch pattern repeat worked 6 times per round
- Casting on and binding off – a standard cast-on of 108 stitches is used, with the bind-off worked using Colour A only
- Blocking and finishing – the completed scarf is pressed and finished according to the Rowan information sheet guidelines
Stitches Used
- Two-colour 1×1 rib – knit 1 in Colour A, purl 1 in Colour B, repeated around, worked for 10 rounds at each end of the scarf
- Stranded stocking stitch in the round – all rounds worked as knit rounds, following the colourwork charts, with the second colour carried across the back
Materials – Yarn
The pattern calls for Rowan Alpaca Soft DK, a DK weight yarn with a soft alpaca-blend composition that gives the finished scarf a lightweight warmth and a subtle sheen. Two colours are required:
- Colour A – Rainy Day (shade 210): 6 × 50g balls
- Colour B – Hunter Green (shade 214): 5 × 50g balls
Materials – Needles
Two needle sizes are required, both used in the round:
- 3.25 mm needles – either a set of 4 double-pointed needles or a circular needle up to 90–40 cm long, used for the two-colour ribbing sections
- 4 mm needles – either a set of 4 double-pointed needles or a circular needle up to 40 cm long, used for the stranded colourwork body
Tension / Gauge
Achieving accurate tension is important for this pattern.
