Product Description
This lightweight triangular shawl incorporates two distinct cable lace and cable lace stitches. It is knit top down, and the stitches cause a pretty and delicate scallop at the neckline. The focal stitch is truly unique and beautiful featuring lace, mock cables and cable stitches. The outside (edge) cable makes this triangular shawl even prettier. While the shawl looks difficult to knit, it is not hard, and is suitable for Intermediate knitters.
The stitches are charted out and written out.
Skill Level: Intermediate (assuming some lace experience)
The sample was knit using Lorna's Laces Solemate, but any lightweight fingering weight yarn will work for this pattern.
Lake Lanier Cuneate Knitted Shawl
What Is Being Made
The Lake Lanier Cuneate is a triangular knitted shawl designed by Linda Lehman. This versatile wrap offers multiple styling options, making it a flexible addition to any wardrobe. The triangular construction provides generous coverage while maintaining an elegant, wearable silhouette suitable for various occasions and layering preferences.
Craft and Construction Method
This is a knitting project classified as intermediate difficulty, requiring a solid working knowledge of lace knitting techniques. The shawl combines decorative lace elements with structured border work, creating a balanced design that showcases both technical skill and artistic flair.
Stitches and Techniques Used
The Lake Lanier Cuneate features both a focal stitch and border stitches derived from Japanese knitting traditions. The design incorporates cable border stitch work, which forms the primary structural element. Lace knitting techniques are essential throughout the project, requiring familiarity with yarn overs, decreases, and other openwork methods that create the shawl's delicate patterning.
Materials and Specifications
- Yarn: 1200 to 1400 yards of light weight fingering yarn (4-ply weight)
- Needles: Size 5 needles with at least a 32-inch cable length
- Notions: Two stitch markers (additional markers recommended), darning needle for finishing
- Gauge: Approximately 5.5 stitches per inch and 8½ rows per inch in cable border stitch when moderately blocked
Design Notes
While gauge provides a reference point for sizing and yarn requirements, the pattern notes that exact gauge adherence is not critically important. Knitters may adjust needle size as needed to achieve the specified gauge, understanding that variations will affect the finished dimensions and potentially alter total yarn consumption. The moderate blocking recommendation helps set the stitches and enhance the shawl's drape and final appearance.
