Product Description

I was inspired by knitting a pair of slippers for a magazine and decided to design some for myself and friends. The slippers are a nice quick project using 2 balls of a standard guage aran wool. I added a pom pom in a contrasting colour to make them more fun.

Lady Pom-Pom Slippers by Monica Russel

Project Overview

The Lady Pom-Pom Slippers are an intermediate-level knitting project designed by Monica Russel. These cozy slippers are sized to fit a medium-sized female foot, accommodating shoe sizes 4.5 to 6.5. This is a quick and satisfying knitting project that results in a pair of snuggly slippers perfect for keeping feet warm and comfortable at home.

What Is Being Made

This pattern creates a complete pair of women's slippers featuring decorative pom-poms as a finishing touch. The slippers are designed with a fitted construction that hugs the foot while providing warmth and comfort. The finished garment includes shaping for the instep and leg opening, creating a well-proportioned slipper that stays securely on the foot.

Knitting Techniques Used

The Lady Pom-Pom Slippers pattern employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques to create structure and shaping:

  • Yarn Forward (YF) Increases: Used strategically throughout the leg and foot sections to create gradual increases in stitch count, building from 58 stitches to 79 stitches across multiple rows. These increases are evenly distributed to maintain a balanced, symmetrical construction.
  • Ribbing: Knit and purl ribbing (K2, P2 pattern) creates elasticity and helps the slippers conform to the foot. This ribbed section appears in the leg opening and provides structure.
  • Instep Shaping: The pattern includes targeted shaping for the instep using decreases to create a contoured fit that follows the natural curve of the foot.
  • Decreases: Techniques including K2tog (knit 2 together) and SKPO (slip 1, knit 1, pass slip stitch over) are used to shape the instep and create the finished edge.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The pattern utilizes a straightforward stitch vocabulary appropriate for intermediate knitters:

  • Stockinette Stitch (St St): Forms the main fabric of the slipper, creating a smooth, classic knit surface.
  • Garter Stitch: Created through alternating knit and purl rows (*K1, P1* repeat), this textured stitch appears in sections of the pattern and adds visual interest.
  • Ribbed Stitches: The K2, P2 ribbing pattern creates vertical lines of texture and provides stretch and recovery to the fabric.
  • Yarn Forward (YF): A decorative increase that creates small eyelet holes, adding visual detail to the leg sections.

Materials and Tools

The pattern specifies particular requirements for yarn weight and needle size to achieve proper fit and fabric drape:

  • Needles: 5mm knitting needles are required for this project.
  • Yarn: The pattern calls for yarn suitable for 5mm needles, worked at a tension of 19 stitches and 23 rows over 10 centimeters (4 inches) in stockinette stitch.
  • Finishing: Pom-poms are added as a decorative embellishment, allowing crafters to choose their favorite color to personalize the finished slippers.

Pattern Difficulty and Suitability

Rated as an intermediate project, the Lady Pom-Pom Slippers require basic knitting competency but are not overly complex. The pattern involves straightforward increases and decreases, simple stitch patterns, and logical shaping sequences. This makes it an ideal project for knitters who have mastered the fundamentals and are ready to tackle garment construction with shaping. The relatively quick completion time makes these slippers a rewarding project that produces an immediately wearable and practical finished object.
