Product Description
This cowl has a lovely, lofty feel to it and once you have mastered the loopy stitch is very quick to make. The loops or ladder effect is made by drawing out a long loop on each double crochet stitch that you make, you do this by wrapping the yarn over a ruler or piece of card. The cowl is designed so you can wrap it around your neck twice to make it nice and snuggly. It is made flat and then seamed. We quite like using two contrast colours, however, just one colour would like lovely too with the benefit of only needing 3 skeins of Plump DK.
**You will need:**Plump DK: 2 skeins of MC (shown in Liquorice), 2 skeins of CC (shown in Darjeeling) 4.5mm needle ruler or piece of card approximately 3.5cm wide
Ladder Cowl by Mrs Moon
What is Being Made
The Ladder Cowl is a crocheted neck accessory designed as a one-size cowl that is worked flat and then seamed together. This intermediate-level crochet project creates a textured, visually interesting cowl featuring contrasting color work and distinctive loopy stitches that give the finished piece its signature ladder-like appearance.
Crochet Techniques Used
This design employs several key crochet techniques to achieve its unique aesthetic. The cowl begins with a foundation chain and uses basic double crochet stitches to establish the base structure. The defining feature of this pattern is the use of loopy stitches, which are created by wrapping yarn around a ruler or cardboard template approximately 3.5 centimeters wide. This technique allows crafters to form consistent, decorative loops that create the ladder effect characteristic of the design. The cowl is constructed in a flat panel and then seamed, making it an excellent project for intermediate crocheters looking to expand their stitch repertoire beyond standard techniques.
Stitches Used
- Foundation Chain (ch): Used to cast on stitches at the beginning of the project
- Double Crochet (dc): The primary structural stitch used throughout the base rows to create a solid fabric foundation
- Loopy Stitches: Decorative stitches formed by wrapping yarn around a ruler or card template to create dimensional loops that form the distinctive ladder pattern
- Seaming: Used to join the flat-worked panel into a finished cowl shape
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Ladder Cowl is designed to be worked in DK weight yarn, which is a medium-weight yarn that works well for creating defined stitch definition and drape. The pattern calls for 2 skeins of main color (MC) and 2 skeins of contrasting color (CC) for a two-color colorwork version. The sample shown features Liquorice for the main color and Darjeeling for the contrasting color. Alternatively, crafters who prefer a solid-colored version can use 3 skeins of a single yarn color. A 4.5mm crochet hook is required to work the yarn at the appropriate gauge. Additionally, crafters will need a ruler or piece of card approximately 3.5 centimeters wide to use as a template for creating the loopy stitches that define this pattern.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters with some foundational experience who are ready to explore more advanced stitch techniques. While the basic double crochet rows are straightforward, the loopy stitch technique requires careful attention and practice to execute consistently, providing a satisfying challenge for developing crafters.
