Product Description
This pattern is written for those who prefer to do the toes on toe up socks on straight needles. The toe starts with a provisional cast on so may need a little more experience. I use the crochet provisional cast on, the tutorial can be found at Purlbee. You can of course use any cast on you like for circular needles.
Please try your sock on half way up the foot and after the heal to make sure it fits like you wish.
The toe of these socks is knitted on 2 straight needles using a short row method, which is fully explained. The foot is knitted in the round using 2 circular needles. The heel is made with short rows. The leg and cuff are knitted in the round using 2 circular needles. The cuff is finished with a stretchy cast off.
The pattern is 10 + 1 for those who wish to use a different circular method. The foot is knitted with a pattern on top and stocking stitch on the bottom. The leg is patterned around.
Lacy Short Row Toe Up Socks by Eclectic Yarncrafts
Project Overview
These are toe-up socks featuring lacy stitch patterns created using the short row technique. Designed by Eclectic Yarncrafts, this knitting pattern offers an intermediate-level construction method that begins at the toe and works upward toward the cuff. The toe-up approach provides flexibility for customizing sock length and ensures a perfect fit at the foot.
What Is Being Made
A pair of knitted socks worked from the toe upward. The pattern accommodates multiple sizes: Small (7" circumference), Medium (8" circumference), Large (9" circumference), and Extra Large (10" circumference). For optimal fit, socks should be knitted approximately ½" smaller than actual foot measurements to achieve a snug, comfortable wear.
Techniques Used
- Toe-up construction: Socks are begun at the toe rather than the cuff, allowing knitters to try on the sock during the knitting process
- Short row shaping: Creates the three-dimensional toe and heel structure through strategic yarn overs and decreases
- Provisional cast on: A temporary cast-on method that allows live stitches to be picked up later; the pattern uses the crochet provisional cast-on technique
- Lace stitch patterns: Decorative openwork created through yarn overs and decreases
- Circular needle knitting: Worked on two circular needles for seamless, in-the-round construction
Stitches Used
- Yarn over (Yo): Yarn moved to the front, creating a new stitch and decorative eyelet when the next stitch is knitted
- Knit 2 together (K2 tog): A right-leaning decrease combining two stitches into one
- Knit 2 together through the back of the loops (K2 tog-b): A left-leaning decrease for balanced shaping
- Slip 2 stitches knitwise, knit next stitch and pass slipped stitches over (S2 K1 PSSO): A double decrease creating elegant lace shaping
- Make 1 (M1): An increase made by picking up the yarn between two stitches, placing it on the left needle, and knitting through the back loop to create a twisted stitch
Materials Required
Needles: Two 2.25mm circular needles (or size required to achieve proper gauge) and a 2.5mm crochet hook for the provisional cast-on method.
Yarn: 100 grams of sock yarn. The pattern example was created using Schoeller + Stahl Fortissima Socka Mexiko. This yarn weight is suitable for 3-ply and 4-ply sock yarns, producing socks with appropriate drape and durability for everyday wear.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate. While the lace stitch patterns and short row techniques require solid knitting fundamentals, the toe-up construction with provisional cast-on is noted as requiring a little more experience. Knitters should be comfortable with yarn overs, multiple decrease techniques, and managing stitches across two circular needles before beginning this project.
