What is Being Made

The Lace Fan Stitch Baby Blanket is a vintage-inspired crocheted baby blanket designed by Carmen Heffernan. This project creates a light and airy blanket suitable for summer use while also providing enough coverage to keep a small baby cozy and swaddled. The blanket features a repeating lace shell pattern that combines delicate openwork with soft texture, making it an elegant yet functional accessory for infants.

Techniques and Construction

This blanket is constructed using a 4-row repeat pattern that creates the signature lace shell design. The pattern is written in US Crochet Terms, making it accessible to crocheters familiar with American terminology. The designer employs a strategic approach to hook sizing—using a 4.5mm crochet hook that is larger than typically recommended for the yarn weight. This intentional choice creates a looser drape and enhanced texture throughout the blanket, though crocheters may opt for a smaller 4mm hook if they prefer a tighter, more structured fabric.

Stitches Used

The blanket utilizes a lace shell stitch pattern as its primary stitch structure. Shell stitches are a classic crochet technique that creates fan-like or shell-shaped motifs by working multiple stitches into the same stitch or space. This particular pattern repeats every 4 rows, allowing for a manageable and meditative crochet experience while building a blanket with beautiful visual rhythm and openwork sections that contribute to the airy quality of the finished piece.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The pattern calls for King Cole Paradise Beaches DK yarn, a premium blend composed of 70% Premium Acrylic and 30% Polyamide with approximately 255 meters per ball. The original design uses three coordinating colorways:

  • Yarn A: 3002 White Russian
  • Yarn B: 3007 Pink Gin
  • Yarn C: 3008 Strawberry Daiquiri

One ball each of these three colors is required, totaling approximately 800 meters of DK weight yarn. The pattern is flexible regarding yarn substitution—any DK weight or light worsted weight yarn can be used in place of the specified King Cole yarn, provided the total yardage remains around 800 meters. Crocheters may also experiment with different yarn weights to create smaller or larger blankets, adjusting hook size accordingly while monitoring yardage requirements.

Difficulty Level

This project is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to work with stitch patterns and color changes. The 4-row repeat pattern is manageable once established, and the lace shell stitch, while requiring attention to detail, is a classic technique that intermediate crafters can execute successfully.
