Product Description

With this rather easy pattern, you can make Koji the beautiful, realistic looking playful crochet tiger.

Size: 6 inch/ 15 cm sitting when made with Istex Lett Lopi and hook E / 3,5 mm.

The instructions are written in US crochet terms. The pattern contains a list of materials, tools and accessories needed. Brand and colour numbers of the needed yarn. A clear and colour coded description of how to crochet and assemble the animal. Pictures and illustrations to help getting everything right.

Materials: For this tiger you need worsted weight yarn and an E US/3.5 mm crochet hook. You need three colours of yarn, orange (1/4 of 100 yard skein), white (1/6) and black (1/10). For the eyes I’ve used 8 mm animal eyes, and I needle-felted a nose (a bit wider than the eyes), but any other kind works too. You will also need fibrefill, pellets for a bit of extra weight in the body (I use Hama beads) and a pipe cleaner for the tail is optional. Lopi colour numbers: 1410 (1704), 0051 and 0052.

Koji the Tiger Crochet Pattern

What Is Being Made

Koji is a crocheted amigurumi tiger toy designed by Sonja van der Wijk under the brand Son's Popkes. This is a small stuffed animal project that measures approximately 5.8 inches (14.8 cm) in sitting height when made with the recommended yarn. The tiger is an intermediate-level crochet project suitable for crafters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle color changes and shaping techniques.

Crochet Techniques Used

The pattern employs several key crochet techniques to create the finished tiger toy. The doll is worked in the round using spiral construction, a method where rounds are joined seamlessly without traditional slip stitches at the end of each round. This technique creates a smooth, continuous fabric ideal for amigurumi toys. The pattern includes color changes throughout the construction, with some changes color-coded in the instructions for clarity. Crafters are instructed to change color in the last loop of a stitch, ensuring the new color appears on the hook as the next round begins. The use of stitch markers is recommended to track the beginning of each new round as the piece spirals upward.

Stitches and Construction Details

While the PDF excerpt does not specify every individual stitch used, the pattern is written in standard American crochet terminology. The spiral construction method and amigurumi approach suggest the use of fundamental stitches such as single crochet for shaping and structure. The pattern requires attention to tension and stitch consistency, as the final size of the toy depends on both the yarn weight selected and how tightly the crocheter works. Experimentation with eye sizing is recommended despite the pattern's suggestions, as individual tension variations will affect proportions.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

Yarn Weight: Worsted weight yarn is used for this project. The designer specifically recommends fuzzy yarn to enhance the tiger's appearance and texture. The yarn used in the original pattern is Istex Lètt lopi, a 100% wool yarn known for its soft, lofty characteristics that create an authentic fuzzy finish ideal for animal toys.

Tools Required: Crochet hook (size to be determined by yarn weight and desired tension), stitch markers for tracking rounds, and stuffing materials for filling the completed amigurumi toy. The pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF document with written instructions in standard American crochet terms.

Pattern Notes for Crafters

  • Read the entire pattern before beginning to understand the structure and techniques
  • Use stitch markers to clearly mark the beginning of each round and move the marker up as new rounds progress
  • Pay attention to color-coded sections in the instructions for complex color changes
  • Experiment with eye sizing based on your personal tension and yarn choice
  • Remember that final toy dimensions will vary based on yarn weight and individual crochet tension
