Product Description
When I was 37 years old, I was on vacation with my family and something extremely unexpected happened: I had a stroke. I spent about a month in the hospital, and my favorite part of every day was when my husband and children would come visit me and wheel me down to the hospital’s koi pond.
When I saw this beautiful gradient set from The Plucky Knitter, I knew it had to become something special. One of my lingering issues is that my arm feels pain when it’s cold, so a snuggly shrug seemed perfect. And at each of the color changes, I added a stitch pattern that reminds me of my happy, relaxing fishies swimming around.
Koi Pond Shrug by Jordan Prouty
What is Being Made
The Koi Pond Shrug is a knitted bolero-style shrug designed by Jordan Prouty. This garment is a snuggly, wearable piece inspired by the designer's personal experience and created to provide warmth while accommodating sensitivity to cold. The shrug features a beautiful gradient color progression that transitions through multiple hues, creating a visually striking finished piece.
Design Inspiration and Construction
This intermediate-level knitting project incorporates a meaningful design element: stitch pattern changes occur at each color transition in the gradient yarn set. These stitch variations are intentionally chosen to evoke the image of koi fish swimming, adding both visual interest and symbolic meaning to the garment. The gradient yarn comes from The Plucky Knitter's Primo DK collection, which provides the color story that drives the design.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Koi Pond Shrug is constructed using fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for an intermediate skill level. The project works primarily in stockinette stitch as the base fabric, which creates a smooth, classic knit surface. The introduction of stitch pattern changes at color transitions adds textural variety and visual complexity to the piece. Circular needles are used for the construction, allowing for seamless or nearly seamless knitting depending on the specific pattern instructions.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
While stockinette stitch forms the foundation of this shrug, the pattern incorporates multiple stitch patterns at color changes that reference the koi fish theme. These stitch variations provide textural interest and break up the solid color blocks created by the gradient yarn. The specific stitch patterns used are integrated throughout the garment at strategic color transition points, creating a cohesive design that tells the story of swimming fish.
Materials and Tools
- Yarn: The Plucky Knitter Primo DK weight yarn in a gradient set; the sample used 180–200 yards total, with approximately 105 grams per color section and 200 yards per 105g skein
- Needles: Size 8 (5.0 mm) circular needles measuring 24 inches in length (or the size required to meet the specified gauge)
- Notions: 1 stitch marker and a tapestry needle for finishing
- Gauge: 19 stitches and 25 rows per 4 inches measured in stockinette stitch
Yarn Weight and Difficulty Level
This pattern uses DK weight yarn, a light and versatile yarn weight that works well for garments requiring drape and wearability. The intermediate difficulty level makes this project suitable for knitters who have mastered basic techniques and are ready to work with color changes and stitch pattern variations. The use of circular needles and the integration of multiple stitch patterns provide an engaging project that builds skills while creating a meaningful, wearable garment.
